Chapter 18 - THE NIGHT HER MOTHER DIED|

Clara didn't go home.
She sat in Margaret's office until sunrise, reading the letter again and again.
Edward remained across the room.
He had not tried to defend himself.
He had not asked her to forgive him.
He simply waited.
Finally, Clara lowered the paper.
"Tell me what happened."
Edward took a slow breath.
Twenty years earlier, he and Clara's mother had arranged to meet a lawyer after discovering that Anselmo was preparing to transfer the Bellara assets permanently.
Her mother had brought the original ledger.
Edward had been driving.
On the way, another vehicle began following them.
The chase lasted several miles.
A second car appeared at an intersection.
Edward swerved.
Their vehicle struck a barrier.
Clara's mother suffered severe injuries.
Edward escaped with minor wounds.
He called emergency services.
But before the ambulance arrived, someone approached the wreckage.
It was Anselmo.
He took the ledger.
He told Edward that if he ever revealed what had happened, Clara would be killed.
Edward had believed him.
"Did my mother survive the accident?"
Edward nodded.
"For several hours."
"Did you see her?"
"Yes."
"Did she say anything?"
Edward's eyes filled with tears.
"She told me to find you and protect you."
Clara's voice broke.
"And you disappeared."
"I thought I could keep you safe by staying away."
"You could have fought."
"I know."
"You could have told someone."
"I know."
"You could have let me grow up knowing the truth."
Edward lowered his head.
"I know."
Clara stood and walked to the window.
For years, she had imagined that if her father ever returned, he would explain everything and somehow make her childhood feel complete.
Instead, she had discovered that the people who claimed to protect her had made choices that left her alone.
She didn't know whether forgiveness was possible.
But she knew she could no longer live inside their secrets.
Margaret approached her.
"There's something else you should see."
She opened a digital file recovered from the original ledger.
It contained a video recorded by Clara's mother.
The image was grainy.
Her mother sat at a desk, looking directly into the camera.
"If this recording is being watched, then I failed to protect the truth."
She explained that she had created a legal trust for Clara.
She had also placed a second copy of the Bellara ledger with an independent attorney.
The attorney's name was Thomas Hale.
Clara looked at Margaret.
"Thomas?"
Margaret nodded.
"He has been protecting the original evidence for years."
The recording continued.
Her mother looked down, then back at the camera.
"Clara, if you are old enough to see this, I want you to understand something. You were never born to inherit a criminal empire. You were born to have a life of your own."
She smiled sadly.
"Don't let anyone convince you that love means obedience. Don't let anyone make you earn a place at their table."
Clara began crying.
Her mother continued.
"And if you ever meet the boy from the Marchetti family again, remember that he is not responsible for his father's sins. But he must answer for his own."
The video ended.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Clara's phone vibrated.
A message from Aurelio.
I know I have no right to ask, but I need to see you.
She stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
There is something I haven't told you about the night I proposed.
Clara typed one response.
What?
His answer arrived immediately.
I had already discovered who your father was. But I didn't know who your mother was. And I was trying to find out before Anselmo did.
Clara read the message twice.
Then she noticed a final attachment.
A photograph.
It showed Aurelio standing outside a courthouse on the day of his proposal.
Beside him was Sofia Bellini.
But this time, Clara noticed something she had missed before.
Sofia was holding a folder marked:
May you like
MARCHETTI FAMILY MURDER INVESTIGATION.
And beneath the folder was a photograph of Aurelio's father.
