Chapter 6 - THE PREGNANCY ANNOUNCEMENT|

Vanessa announced her pregnancy at a family dinner two days later.
I learned about it through a photograph posted by Dominic’s younger sister, Olivia.
The picture showed Vanessa seated beside Margaret in the Blackwood dining room. Dominic stood behind them with one hand resting on Vanessa’s shoulder. A silver frame containing an ultrasound image sat prominently on the table.
The caption read:
Our family has a beautiful new beginning to celebrate.
I stared at the photograph until the screen blurred.
There was no mention of me.
Not even a polite acknowledgment that I had spent years caring for Margaret and maintaining the household while Dominic built his business.
I was already preparing to close the app when another message appeared.
It was from Olivia.
Emma, I’m sorry. I thought you knew about the trust.
My fingers went cold.
I called her immediately.
“Olivia, what did you mean?”
She sounded frightened.
“Dominic told us you understood the arrangement. He said your marriage had become more of a partnership than a romance, and that you both agreed to keep things private until the trust review was complete.”
“I never agreed to that.”
“I know that now.”
“What arrangement?”
Olivia took a shaky breath.
“The family trust has a succession review scheduled for the end of the year. Dominic told everyone that he needed to preserve stability until then. He said you were comfortable with the situation.”
“And Vanessa?”
“She was introduced to the family as someone who would help him after the review.”
I closed my eyes.
“Help him how?”
Olivia hesitated.
“Margaret thinks the baby will strengthen Dominic’s position in the family. There’s an old clause about descendants, although I don’t know the details.”
I remembered the scanned agreement.
The vague language about family continuity.
The insistence that my marriage remain unchanged.
“Olivia, does the trust require Dominic to have a child?”
“I don’t know. But I heard Margaret say that the family needed an heir who could carry the Blackwood name.”
My throat tightened.
I had endured years of fertility appointments, painful procedures, and negative tests. Dominic had always insisted that he wanted a child with me, but that we should not let the process consume our marriage.
Had he been waiting for Vanessa to become pregnant while keeping me in place for financial reasons?
“I need to ask you something,” I said. “Did Dominic ever tell the family that he had recovered his hearing?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three years ago. At Christmas.”
I stared at the wall.
“Everyone knew?”
“Not everyone. But Margaret, Gabriel, and I did.”
I could barely breathe.
“How did they explain his continued use of hearing aids?”
Olivia began to cry.
“Dominic said it was easier to keep the recovery private. He told us you were under a lot of stress and that he would explain everything when the time was right.”
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
Her voice broke.
“I’m sorry, Emma.”
I ended the call gently.
For years, I had believed my marriage was struggling because I was not patient enough, not gentle enough, not understanding enough.
Now I wondered whether I had been placed inside a story written by people who had decided my role before I knew there was a script.
The baby was not merely a secret.

The baby was part of a plan.
And I intended to discover exactly what that plan was.
