Chapter 15 - THE RECORDING|

Vanessa contacted me late that night.
Her voice was trembling.
“I think Dominic knows I've given you the recording.”
“How?”
“He asked me whether I had spoken to you. When I said no, he looked at me and said he could tell when people were lying.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“Not directly. He said that if I wanted our baby to have a secure future, I needed to stop making emotional decisions.”
I felt a familiar anger rising.
“Where are you now?”
“At my sister's apartment.”
“Stay there. Don't meet him alone.”
After a pause, she said, “There's something I haven't told you.”
I waited.
“Dominic asked me to record a conversation with you.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“He wanted me to ask you about the foundation's invoices. He said if you admitted approving them, it would help settle the dispute.”
I felt sick.
“He wanted you to get me to confess to something I didn't do.”
“I think so.”
“Did you record anything?”
“Yes.”
She sent me an audio file.
The recording began with Vanessa asking whether I remembered signing the financial summaries. My voice answered that I remembered reviewing routine administrative reports, but I had never authorized payments to outside companies.
Then Vanessa asked whether Dominic had explained the consulting invoices.
I said he had told me not to worry about them.
The recording ended.
It did not prove that Dominic had committed fraud, but it supported my account that I had not knowingly approved the transactions.
Rebecca listened to it and immediately forwarded it to the forensic accountant.
“Keep the original file,” she said. “Do not edit it or share it publicly.”
The following morning, Gabriel sent another message.
I found the document that explains why Dominic is so desperate to keep the marriage intact.
He attached a photograph of a page from the trust agreement.
The clause stated that if a family officer became subject to a credible investigation involving the charitable foundation, an independent review would be required before the next distribution of family assets.
The officer was Dominic.
But the agreement also contained a provision that worried me.
If a designated administrator knowingly concealed misconduct, that person could lose access to certain benefits and become subject to a separate review.
My name appeared in an appendix listing the foundation’s administrators.
I had never been informed that my administrative role carried such responsibilities.
Rebecca examined the page.
“This doesn't establish that you are liable,” she said. “We need to determine whether you were properly appointed, what authority you actually had, and whether you knowingly approved anything.”
“Could Dominic have used my name to protect himself?”
“Yes. But we need evidence.”
We had the altered summaries, the missing records, the suspicious invoices, and the recordings.
What we lacked was the original financial ledger.
Gabriel believed Dominic had stored it in a secure archive maintained by the company’s external accountants.
Rebecca arranged for the appropriate legal requests to be made.
That evening, Vanessa called again.
“I want to do the right thing,” she said. “Even if Dominic never marries me.”
“Then tell the truth because it's the truth, not because you expect a reward.”
“I will.”
After we hung up, I sat beside the window and watched the rain fall across the street.
I had once believed the hardest part of my marriage was the silence.
May you like
Now I understood that the silence had protected something far more dangerous.
And the truth was finally beginning to speak.
