Chapter 16 - THE LEDGER|

The original ledger arrived at Rebecca’s office under a formal document-production request.
It was a thick digital archive containing invoices, payment authorizations, meeting minutes, and correspondence related to the Blackwood charitable foundation.
The forensic accountant worked through the records for two days.
On the third morning, Rebecca called me.
“We found evidence that several summaries were altered after they were signed.”
I sat down.
“Can they prove who changed them?”
“Some changes are associated with accounts used by the foundation’s external administrator. Others require further investigation. But the original records show that the reports you reviewed did not contain the same figures as the versions later submitted to the trust committee.”
“So my signature was attached to different numbers.”
“That appears to be the case in several instances.”
I covered my mouth.
The betrayal was no longer only personal.
Dominic had potentially used the habits that made me a dependable wife to make me appear responsible for financial decisions I had never approved.
Rebecca continued.
“We also found correspondence involving Mr. Vale. He was asked to prepare a revised summary shortly before the trust review. The email suggests that the revised document was intended to simplify the reporting.”
“Does it prove fraud?”
“No. But it raises serious questions about who authorized the changes and why.”
I asked her to send everything to the appropriate investigators.
That afternoon, Dominic called.
I let it go to voicemail.
His message was brief.
“Emma, we need to stop this before it becomes irreversible. You don't understand the consequences of what you're doing. Call me.”
I deleted nothing. I saved the message and sent a copy to Rebecca.
An hour later, Gabriel arrived at my apartment.
He looked shaken.
“Dominic knows the ledger has been found,” he said.
“How?”
“Someone inside the company told him.”
“Then the company has a serious security problem.”
Gabriel nodded.
“He thinks you gave the records to the investigators.”
“I did.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“He's going to try to make you look like the person responsible.”
“Let him try.”
“You don't understand. He has spent years building a reputation as a careful businessman. If he believes that reputation is about to collapse, he may do something reckless.”
“Are you warning me about him?”
“I'm warning you about everyone who has something to lose.”
I studied him.
“Why are you still helping me?”
“Because I helped him lie. Because I stayed silent when I should have spoken. And because I can't undo those years, but I can stop helping him now.”
I wanted to believe him, but trust was no longer something I offered because someone sounded sincere.
“Give Rebecca a complete statement,” I said. “Everything you know. No selective memories. No protecting Dominic.”
Gabriel nodded.
“I will.”
That evening, Margaret released a written statement confirming that she had not knowingly approved the trust amendment in its current form. She requested an independent review and agreed to cooperate with investigators.
The news spread quickly through the family’s business circles.
Dominic’s carefully controlled world began to fracture.
But the next development came from Vanessa.
She sent me a message with a photograph attached.
It showed Dominic entering a private office building with a woman I did not recognize.

I think this is Mr. Vale's business partner. She told Dominic she could make the original records disappear.
