Chapter 18 - THE FINAL OFFER|

Dominic requested one final meeting through his attorney.

Rebecca agreed to attend, provided the discussion remained focused on the divorce and the settlement proposal. We met in a conference room overlooking downtown Chicago.

Dominic arrived without his usual entourage.

For the first time in years, he looked tired.

He sat opposite me and studied my face.

“I never wanted things to end this way,” he said.

I folded my hands.

“You had three years to choose a different ending.”

He swallowed.

“I know I hurt you.”

“You didn't simply hurt me. You made me doubt my own worth. You let me believe I was failing to communicate with the man I loved, when you were deliberately refusing to communicate with me.”

His eyes lowered.

“I was selfish.”

“Yes.”

“I thought if I could keep everything stable, I could figure out what I wanted.”

“You knew what you wanted. You wanted Vanessa, the marriage, your family’s approval, and the protection of the trust. You wanted everything without having to tell the truth.”

He did not argue.

For a moment, I saw the man I had once loved. Not the husband I had imagined, but the frightened, flawed person who had chosen cowardice over honesty.

Then he placed a document on the table.

“This settlement will give you financial independence. You can leave the foundation, keep your privacy, and move on.”

I glanced at the release clauses.

“And the investigation?”

“Your cooperation would remain subject to legal requirements.”

“Would I be required to certify that I knew nothing about the altered records?”

He hesitated.

“The wording can be adjusted.”

“Would you admit that you pretended to be deaf?”

His jaw tightened.

“Why does that matter to the settlement?”

“Because it matters to me.”

He looked at me for a long time.

Finally, he said, “Yes. I will acknowledge that my hearing returned and that I did not tell you.”

I felt no relief.

A confession offered only when it could be negotiated into a contract was not the same as remorse.

“Will you tell Vanessa the truth about the wedding?”

He looked away.

“I've already told her there will be no wedding until the review is complete.”

“That's not the truth. The truth is that you have no intention of marrying her.”

His silence answered.

I stood.

“Then we're finished.”

“Emma, please.”

I stopped at the door.

“I did love you in my own way.”

I looked back.

“Your way required me to disappear so you wouldn't have to listen.”

His face crumpled slightly.

For the first time, I saw him understand that the damage could not be repaired with money or an apology.

I left the room.

Outside, Rebecca walked beside me.

“You handled that well.”

“I don't feel strong.”

“You don't have to feel strong to make a strong decision.”

My phone buzzed.

It was a message from Vanessa.

Dominic says the baby will have everything it needs, but he refuses to discuss the future. I think he's finally showing me who he really is.

I typed a reply.

Believe what he does, not what he promises.

Then I put the phone away.

The divorce was moving forward. The trust review was underway. The financial evidence was in the hands of professionals who could determine what had actually happened.

For the first time, my future no longer depended on Dominic’s choices.

But the final review meeting was approaching.

And someone had just sent Rebecca a document that could change everything.
