Chapter 8 - The Architecture of Forgiveness

"Everything smells incredible, Gabriel," Valeria smiled, walking up behind me and wrapping her warm arms around my waist, resting her forehead against my back. It was the exact gesture she used to do before I left for the ship, but this time, there was no ticking clock hanging over our heads. There was no port date waiting to tear us apart.

"It’s almost ready, mi amor," I said, turning around in her embrace and kissing the top of her head. "Go sit down. You’ve been working in the garden all morning."

"I like working in the garden, Gabriel," she whispered, looking up at me with eyes that were entirely clear of fear. "Every time I plant something new, it feels like we’re reclaiming another piece of this place. We’re making it ours."

From the front gate, the doorbell rang. I walked down the side path to open the entryway, expecting another neighbor. Instead, I found a young man wearing a courier uniform, holding a small clipboard and a certified letter from the Jalisco state correctional system.

I signed the paper, took the letter, and walked back to my home office to read it in private.

The letter detailed the final sentencing of Roberto and Sophia Vance. Because they had cooperated fully with the forensic accountants to recover the embezzled funds from their other fraudulent ventures, and because they had entered a formal plea of guilty to federal wire fraud, they had been sentenced to eight years in a federal facility, with zero possibility of early release.

I stared at the paper for a long time. The anger that had once consumed my chest was entirely absent. I didn't feel a surge of triumph or a desire to gloat. I simply felt a deep, quiet sense of closure. Roberto had scriptured his own tragedy, and the law had executed the final act.

I folded the letter, locked it inside the secure metal safe where I kept our property deed, and walked back out into the sun-drenched courtyard. The music was playing—a soft, acoustic guitar melody that filled the space with a calm, grounding warmth. I looked at my family, my true wealth, and knew that the architecture of our future was officially solid.
