Chapter 2 - The Scraps of Luxury

The shadows behind the three-story mansion were long, dark, and damp. The cheerful, upbeat pop music from the indoor party leaked out through the kitchen windows, creating a grotesque soundtrack for the reality that crystallized in front of my eyes.

Sitting on the cold, wet concrete directly beside three large, black plastic trash bins was a woman. She was curled over herself, huddled against the siding of the house as a light gray drizzle began to fall from the evening sky. She wore a dark, olive-green cotton dress that was visibly filthy, the fabric torn open at the shoulder to reveal a pale, bruised collarbone. Her hair was a matted, unwashed tangle of dark curls, completely devoid of the vibrant shine I remembered. Her face was hollow, her cheekbones sharp and skeletal, and her skin possessed a gray, sickly pallor that had nothing to do with the fading twilight.

It was Valeria.

In her lap, she held a cheap, white styrofoam plate. And in her arms, huddled tightly against her chest, was our four-year-old son, Mateo. He was wearing a oversized, stained gray t-shirt, his bare legs covered in dirt, his small shoulders shaking as he wept silently from raw, deep-seated hunger.

Through the paralyzing shock that locked my joints, I looked down at the plastic plate in her hands. My stomach violently churned. Strewed across the styrofoam were greasy pork bones, clumped, cold rice, and half-eaten pieces of tortillas—scraps that had clearly been scraped off the plates of the guests celebrating inside the house and thrown into the garbage bins.

My wife was picking through trash to keep our son alive.

Tears were streaming down Valeria's hollow cheeks, washing clean tracks through the dirt on her face. Her fingers trembled as she picked a small, clean piece of chicken meat off a discarded bone. She brought it to Mateo's lips, whispering in a voice so raspy, broken, and desperate it fractured something fundamental inside my soul.

"Eat, baby... I’m sorry," she sobbed softly, her body shivering in the damp cold. "This is all Mama could find tonight. I’ll clean it off. I promise I’ll clean it off for you. Just swallow it, please."

Inside the villa, the clinking of glasses grew louder. A man's voice—a voice I recognized with terrifying clarity—bellowed a boisterous toast: "To success, to luxury, and to the finer things in life! Salute!" A chorus of cheerful cheers responded.

It was Roberto.

My legs entirely gave out. The chief engineer who had stood solid through category-five ocean storms collapsed hard onto his knees on the wet pavement. The impact vibrated through my joints, but I barely felt it. The bags of toys, the gold jewelry, the perfume—they sat scattered on the concrete like a mockery.

"V... Valeria?" I choked out, the word barely surviving the constriction in my throat.

Valeria’s head snapped up. Her bloodshot, exhausted eyes locked onto mine. For a terrible, agonizing second, there was no joy in her expression. There was only a profound, defensive terror. She automatically clutched Mateo tighter, pulling her legs back toward the trash bins as if she expected to be hit, before the reality of my face finally registered through her trauma.

The look of absolute, naked horror in her eyes told me everything I needed to know. This wasn't an accident. She hadn't wandered back here by mistake.

She had been systematically broken. And the man who had promised to treat her like a queen was currently inside, drinking premium tequila bought with my blood money.
