Chapter 6 - Strip the Illusion

The next morning, the grand mansion in Zapopan felt completely different. The high-class guests were gone, the music was dead, and the two luxury SUVs in the driveway sat completely immobile, their electronic registration chips remotely deactivated by the federal fiscal authority.

At 9:00 a.m., a team of sharp, dark-suited legal investigators from the federal prosecutor's office arrived at the front gates, accompanied by three local police cruisers. They didn't come to negotiate with Roberto. They came with a federal seizure warrant for the property and an arrest order for grand wire fraud and domestic exploitation.

Valeria and I sat at the large dining room table. She was wearing a clean, soft velvet tracksuit that Sophia had left behind in her rush to escape, her hair washed, her face looking slightly more alive after a night of real food and medical attention from a private doctor I had hired to visit the house. Mateo sat in my lap, happily coloring a new picture book, his small hand holding a piece of fresh melon.

Roberto was led down the grand staircase in handcuffs, his tailored blazer wrinkled, his head hung low in absolute humiliation. Behind him, Sophia wept into a designer tissue, her diamond necklace already confiscated by the forensic accountants as part of the asset recovery protocol.

"Gabriel, please," Sophia begged as she passed the dining room, her voice cracking with terror. "We can give you the house! We can sign the deed over today! Just tell your lawyers to drop the federal charges! We have children!"

"You should have thought about children when you watched my son eat out of a trash bin on your patio, Sophia," I said, my voice completely flat, refusing to look her in the eye. "You stood in that kitchen wearing diamonds bought with my double shifts while my wife starved in the mud. You deserve every single wall of the cell you’re about to walk into."

The federal agent stepped forward, handing a thick leather folder directly to Valeria. "Mrs. Vance, by order of the federal fiscal court, the corporate entity holding the title to this estate has been placed under your sole individual ownership as part of the immediate restitution program. The bank accounts containing the remaining three hundred thousand pesos have been transferred to a secure private trust in your name. Roberto Vance and his wife are barred from ever entering this municipality again pending their trial."

Roberto looked at me one final time before the officers pushed him through the front glass doors. His eyes were wide with a desperate, silent plea, but he found nothing in my expression but the cold, unyielding finality of the ocean. He had stolen my time, my money, and my family's dignity. Now, he was going to pay the true market price for his greed.
