Chapter 5 - The Global Lifeline

Roberto’s arrogant smirk was his final mistake. He assumed I was just a simple engineer who spent his time turning wrenches, entirely ignorant of how the modern financial world operated. He forgot that Ruta Norte Logística and the international cruise line I worked for were massive, multi-billion-dollar global corporations with legal teams that could crush a local Jalisco property scammer in an afternoon.
I didn't argue with him. I didn't swing a fist, though every muscle in my body screamed to do so. Instead, I pulled my international satellite smartphone from my pocket. It was a rugged, specialized device provided by the cruise line, connected to a secure, global network that functioned anywhere on the planet.
I dialed a direct number I had kept in my contacts for two years—the personal line of Alejandro, the Chief Legal Officer for the international maritime conglomerate that owned my ship. Alejandro wasn't just a corporate suit; he was a close personal friend whose family I had helped rescue when their luxury yacht suffered an engine room fire off the coast of Cabo San Lucas.
"Alejandro," I said when the line connected, my voice as steady as steel. "I need the international compliance team. I’m standing inside a modern villa in Zapopan, Mexico. My brother, Roberto Vance, has used the power of attorney over my corporate salary deposits to execute major financial fraud, embezzlement, and human rights abuse against my family."
On the other end of the line, I heard the sharp rustle of papers and the immediate typing of a keyboard. Alejandro’s voice was instantly razor-sharp. "Gabriel? My god, man. Give me the account routing numbers and the name of his property corporation. Our forensic audit team in Mexico City can freeze any domestic bank account tied to our payroll routing within twenty minutes under the international anti-money laundering statutes."
I pulled the paperwork from my inner jacket pocket—the original power of attorney contract I had signed three years ago, which listed every account and corporate entity Roberto had established using my names. I read the alphanumeric codes aloud, one by one, while Roberto watched me from the kitchen island, his face slowly transitioning from arrogant confidence to pure, paralyzing terror.
"The routing is verified, Gabriel," Alejandro said, his voice dropping into a cold, professional finality. "The funds originated from an international corporate account, which means this falls under federal wire fraud jurisdiction. I am contacting the federal fiscal prosecutor in Guadalajara right now. We are freezing his corporate registrations, his personal accounts, and the titles to those luxury SUVs in his driveway. Tell him to stay exactly where he is."
I hung up the phone and laid it face-down on the marble counter.
Roberto looked at his phone, which had suddenly begun to buzz violently in his hand. A series of automated alerts from his bank flashed across the screen in rapid succession.

He dropped the phone onto the floor, the glass screen cracking as it hit the porcelain. He looked up at me, his mouth opening in a silent, horrified gasp. The castle of cards he had spent three years building using my isolation as mortar had just collapsed into dust in less than five minutes.
