Chapter 5 - The Key Under the Floorboard|

Luca returned to the mansion with the footage stored on an encrypted drive.

He did not confront Bianca immediately. Marcus had taught him that an accusation was useless if it merely warned an enemy to destroy the evidence.

Instead, Luca ordered a discreet review of every security access log, financial transfer, and visitor record from the past six months. He told no one except his head of security, Enzo Bellini.

Sophie noticed the change before breakfast.

Luca was no longer making excuses. He was watching the house as though every corridor had become a potential crime scene.

"What's happening?" she asked.

"I'm investigating."

"That isn't an answer."

He placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside was a copy of the security footage.

Sophie watched Bianca enter their bedroom. She saw the woman approach the bed, inspect the suitcase, then move toward the wardrobe. Bianca crouched, lifted the edge of a loose floorboard, and removed a small object.

"What did she take?" Sophie whispered.

"We don't know."

Sophie replayed the clip.

"Look at her left hand."

Luca leaned closer.

Bianca had worn a ring with a dark red stone. As she bent over the floorboard, the stone caught the light.

Sophie remembered the ring.

She had seen it on Carlo's hand at the foundation dinner, though she had assumed it was a family piece.

"That ring belongs to Carlo."

Luca looked at her sharply.

"Are you sure?"

"He took it off before dinner because it scratched the table. Bianca picked it up and put it in her purse. I thought she was returning it to him."

Luca called Enzo.

"Search the room. Carefully. Don't let Bianca know."

Within an hour, Enzo found a narrow gap beneath the floorboard. It was empty.

But a dust outline showed that something rectangular had been stored there.

Sophie remembered the previous winter, when Luca had been away for three days and Marcus had visited her in the middle of the night. He had told her that the Moretti family possessed a document capable of destroying the alliance between their organization and the Rinaldis.

He had asked her to keep it safe.

She had hidden the document beneath the floorboard.

She had never told Luca because Marcus had warned her that even his son might be watched.

Now the document was gone.

Luca stared at her.

"You had something hidden in our bedroom?"

"Your father gave it to me."

"My father trusted you with a secret he didn't trust me with?"

"He asked me to protect it. I did."

"Until Bianca took it."

Sophie stood.

"Don't you dare blame me for the fact that your family keeps secrets from one another."

He flinched.

She walked toward the door, then stopped.

"There's something else. Bianca didn't come into our room to look for clothes or jewelry. She went straight to that floorboard. She knew exactly where to look."

Luca's anger gave way to something more dangerous.

Someone had told Bianca where the document was hidden.

Someone who knew Sophie had it.

Someone close enough to the family to understand how Marcus operated.

His phone buzzed with a message from Enzo.

We found the missing document listed in the company's internal archive. It has been digitally altered.

A second message followed.

The revised version names Bianca Rinaldi as Theo's legal guardian if anything happens to either parent.

Luca read the words twice.

Then he looked at Sophie.

"She's not trying to marry me."

"No," Sophie said quietly. "She's trying to take our son."
