Chapter 16 - The Truth About Marcus|

Luca went to the hospital before dawn.
Marcus was sitting beside the window when his son entered. One look at Luca's face told him that the truth had finally caught up with them.
"They found the transfer authorization," Luca said.
Marcus did not ask which one.
"Then you know."
"I know you signed the first document that allowed Carlo to move money through our company. I know Adrian discovered it. I know someone used that transfer to build the conspiracy that nearly destroyed my family."
Marcus lowered his gaze.
"I signed it."
The admission struck Luca harder than any denial could have.
"Why?"
"Carlo claimed the money was being used to protect our legitimate businesses during an investigation. I believed him. By the time I realized the records had been altered, the funds were gone and Adrian had begun asking questions."
"You knew he was investigating Carlo."
"Yes."
"And you let him go on alone."
"I thought I could control the damage."
Luca laughed once, without humor.
"That seems to be the family motto."
Marcus accepted the blow.
"I was afraid that if the truth became public, the entire organization would collapse. I thought I could repair what I'd done before anyone was hurt."
"But Adrian died."
Marcus's eyes shone.
"Yes."
"And you let me believe it was an accident."
"I thought I was protecting you from the same people who killed him."
"You protected the family name. There is a difference."
Marcus looked away.
For years, he had built his life around the idea that power meant preventing consequences. He had hidden evidence, silenced questions, and convinced himself that every secret was a shield. Now he was forced to see that each secret had become another weapon in someone else's hands.
"I will give Detective Brooks everything," Marcus said. "The records, the accounts, the names of every person who helped Carlo. I won't ask for immunity."
Luca watched him carefully.
"You could lose the company."
"I know."
"You could lose the organization."
"I know."
"You could go to prison."
Marcus nodded.
"Then perhaps that is the price of what I did."
For the first time since Luca was a boy, his father seemed smaller—not weak, but human.
Luca sat down.
"I don't know if I can forgive you."
"I'm not asking you to."
They remained silent for a long time.
When Luca finally stood, Marcus spoke again.
"How is Sophie?"
"Exhausted. Furious. She has every right to be."
"And Theo?"
"Safe."
Marcus closed his eyes in relief.
"Then protect them by telling them the truth. Even when it makes you look like the worst man in the room."
Luca thought of the bedroom suitcase, the frightened look on Sophie's face, and the moment he had told her she couldn't take their son.
He had believed his authority could hold their family together.
Instead, it had nearly driven them apart.
When he returned home, Sophie was sitting at the kitchen table with Theo asleep against her shoulder. She looked up as Luca entered.
"Did your father tell you everything?"
"Enough."
"Are you going to tell me?"
Luca pulled out the chair opposite her.
"All of it."

For the first time, he did not ask her to trust him.
He began with the truth.
