Chapter 17 - The Wife Who Chose Herself|

Luca told Sophie everything.

He explained the financial transfers, Adrian's investigation, Marcus's silence, and the pressure Carlo had applied to force the merger. He admitted that he had known Bianca was involved in the negotiations but had chosen not to tell Sophie because he believed keeping her uninformed would keep her safe.

When he finished, the kitchen was silent.

Sophie sat with her hands folded in front of her.

"You made decisions about our home, our marriage, and our son without allowing me to participate."

"I did."

"You let me believe you might marry another woman."

"I did."

"You told me I couldn't take Theo when I tried to leave."

His face tightened.

"Yes."

"Do you understand what that felt like?"

"I think I do."

"No, Luca. You understand what it felt like to lose control. That's not the same thing."

He looked down.

She continued, her voice steady.

"When I packed that suitcase, I wasn't trying to punish you. I was trying to give Theo a place where he wouldn't grow up believing love meant obeying the most powerful person in the room."

Luca swallowed.

"I don't want him to grow up like that."

"Then don't teach him that."

He reached across the table, then stopped before touching her.

"I love you."

Sophie closed her eyes briefly.

"I believe you."

Hope rose in his face.

"But love doesn't erase what happened."

The hope disappeared.

"I know."

"I need space. I need my own lawyer. I need to know I can leave this house without being followed, threatened, or told that I'm making a mistake."

"You can."

"And Theo will not be used as leverage in a family dispute again. Not by your father, not by your advisers, and not by you."

Luca nodded.

"I agree."

"I want the security arrangements explained to me. I want access to the records that concern our son. And if anyone threatens us, I will be informed immediately."

"Yes."

She studied him.

"You're agreeing very easily."

"Because you're right."

"That doesn't mean I trust you yet."

"I understand."

For several seconds, they looked at each other across the table. The distance between them was no longer filled with lies, but it was still there.

Sophie finally stood and carried Theo upstairs.

Luca remained at the table, alone with the truth he should have shared months earlier.

The following morning, Sophie's lawyer arrived. Luca had arranged no meeting with her, made no attempt to influence the conversation, and sent no one to question the lawyer afterward.

Sophie noticed.

It wasn't forgiveness.

It was the first small piece of evidence that he might be learning.

That afternoon, she took Theo to a quiet apartment Marcus owned outside the city. It had secure entrances, a private garden, and no connection to the Moretti mansion's daily operations.

Luca did not stop her.

He helped carry the suitcase to the car.

Theo hugged his father goodbye.

"Are you coming with us?"

Luca knelt.

"Not today, buddy. Your mom needs some quiet, and I need to fix some things."

"Did you do something bad?"

Luca took a breath.

"Yes. I made choices that hurt people I love. I'm going to work hard to make them right."

Theo considered this.

"Can you still read me stories?"

"Whenever you want me to."

Theo hugged him again.

Then Sophie closed the car door.

May you like

As the vehicle pulled away, Luca stood beneath the mansion's stone archway and watched his family leave.

This time, he did not mistake letting them go for losing them.
