Chapter 19 - The Truth Adrian Left Behind|

Sophie recognized the garden immediately.

It belonged to the apartment where Theo was staying.

The photograph had been taken less than an hour earlier.

She called Enzo, who secured Theo inside and moved him to the building's protected interior room. Security checked the grounds, the entrances, and the neighboring properties. No one was found.

Luca arrived twenty minutes later, his face pale with anger.

"Rusk knows where we are."

"Or someone wants us to think he does," Sophie replied.

Detective Brooks traced the message through a temporary device. The signal led to a public network near the hotel where Rusk was supposed to meet the journalist.

"It could be a diversion," she warned. "We're not moving anyone until we know more."

Luca wanted to rush out. Sophie caught his hand.

"Look at me."

He did.

"Don't let them make the same decision for you twice."

His breathing slowed.

"All right."

They waited.

At the hotel, Rusk arrived carrying a briefcase. The journalist was a decoy working with the authorities. Detectives moved in when Rusk opened the case and removed a folder of financial records.

He attempted to flee through a service corridor but was apprehended before reaching the street.

Inside the briefcase, investigators found copies of the altered trust, records of payments to the kidnapped guard, and a sealed envelope bearing Adrian's handwriting.

The envelope was addressed to Marcus.

When Marcus opened it, his hands shook.

Adrian's statement explained that he had discovered Carlo's scheme and intended to expose it. But the final pages revealed something no one had expected: Adrian had also found evidence that Matteo was secretly reporting to a rival criminal organization. Matteo had been feeding information to both sides, hoping to profit regardless of which family prevailed.

He had provided the details that made the attack on Adrian possible.

The accident had not been random.

The evidence didn't establish that Marcus had ordered his son's death, but it showed that he had received warnings about the danger and failed to act quickly enough.

Marcus read the statement twice.

Then he set it down.

"I knew Carlo was dangerous," he said. "I didn't know how far Matteo had gone. But I knew Adrian was afraid, and I told him to wait until I could resolve it."

Luca's voice was low.

"And he died while waiting."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

No one offered him comfort.

The truth was too large for a simple apology.

Detective Brooks confirmed that Rusk's records supported the evidence against Carlo, Bianca, and Matteo. The case would move forward, and the recovered documents would be preserved for prosecution.

That night, Luca visited Sophie and Theo.

He sat on the floor while Theo built a tower from wooden blocks. Sophie watched from the sofa, careful not to confuse his presence with reconciliation.

"Dad," Theo said, "are the bad people gone?"

"Some have been arrested. The others will have to answer for what they did."

"Will they come back?"

Luca chose his words carefully.

"We're taking steps to keep you safe. And if anything worries you, you can tell Mom or me."

Theo placed the final block on the tower.

"Then we should make the tower stronger."

Luca smiled faintly.

"That's a good idea."

When Theo went to bed, Sophie walked Luca to the door.

"Thank you for telling us the truth," she said.

"I should have done it months ago."

"Yes."

He accepted the answer.

She looked at him for a long moment.

"I'm not ready to come home."

"I know."

"But I don't want Theo to think his parents have to become strangers to be safe."

Luca's eyes softened.

"Neither do I."

For the first time, she reached for his hand.

It was not a promise that everything would be repaired.

It was a decision to see what honesty might make possible.
