Chapter 8 - Justice DeliveredThe jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes—one of the fastest verdicts in Texas legal history.

When the court reassembled for the reading of the verdict, the atmospheric tension in the chamber was electric.

Judge Marcus Vance stood at the bench, holding the official verdict sheets.

“On count one, Capital Murder of an Unborn Child,” Judge Vance read aloud, his voice thunderous. “We find the defendant, Mateo Cruz, GUILTY.”

A wave of emotional relief swept through the gallery.

“On count two, Aggravated Felony Torture and Insurance Fraud, we find the defendant, Mateo Cruz, GUILTY.”

Mateo slumped forward on the defense table, covering his face with his hands, sobbing hysterically as thirty consecutive guilty verdicts were read against him.

“On count one, Conspiracy to Commit Capital Murder and Aggravated Torture,” Judge Vance continued, looking down at Elena. “We find the defendant, Elena Cruz, GUILTY.”

Elena let out a sharp, choked gasp before fainting backward into her chair.

Two weeks later, the formal sentencing hearing was held. Judge Vance showed zero mercy.

“Mateo Cruz,” Judge Vance declared, slamming his gavel down with resounding force. “For your monstrous cruelty, unyielding greed, and utter betrayal of human life, I sentence you to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the Allan B. Polunsky Unit.”

“Elena Cruz, you are sentenced to forty years in state prison without the possibility of early release.”

As bailiffs chained Mateo to lead him away to his permanent cell, he turned toward me one last time, tears streaming down his face, mouthing: “Maria... please forgive me...”

I simply picked up my handbag, held my sister’s arm, and walked out of the courtroom into the warm Texas sunlight without looking back once.
