Chapter 3 - The Forensic EvidenceFor the next four days, I remained under strict police guard in the hospital’s high-security trauma wing.

Dr. Hayes and a team of forensic specialists documented every single injury on my body—the deep rope burns around my wrists, the severe tissue bruising across my abdomen, the old fractured ribs that had healed improperly, and the acute trauma that had caused the loss of my unborn son.
While my body began the slow, agonizing process of physical healing, Detective Sarah Brooks from the Major Crimes Division sat in my hospital room with a laptop.
Beside me sat Rachel Vance, a high-powered victim advocate and criminal attorney assigned to my case by the state legal aid society.
“Maria,” Detective Brooks said gently, opening a audio analysis program on her screen. “Our technical team has spent the last forty-eight hours processing the files from your phone. The audio clarity is extraordinary.”
Brooks hit the play button on the laptop.
The quiet hospital room was suddenly filled with the clear sound of morning wind, followed by the sharp, terrifying sound of Mateo’s voice echoing through the speaker:
“Tie her tighter, Mom! She needs to learn that daughters aren't worth the food they eat!”
Then came Elena’s cold, cruel response: “Hit her lower, Mateo. If she loses this one, we can find you a younger wife who can give you a real heir.”
Rachel Vance closed her eyes, her jaw tight with intense disgust. “That recording alone establishes premeditated torture, felony domestic assault, and intent to cause loss of pregnancy.”
“It gets worse,” Detective Brooks added, pulling up a second file folder. “We executed a search warrant on the Texas rental property yesterday afternoon. Underneath the back porch boards, my forensic team found three other phones that Mateo had hidden—phones containing text messages between Mateo and a woman in Mexico, discussing how much money he would receive from an offshore insurance policy if you suffered a fatal accident.”
My heart stopped. “Insurance?”
“Mateo took out a half-million-dollar accidental death policy on you six months ago,” Brooks revealed. “His mother was listed as the primary beneficiary. This wasn't just about cultural pressure or wanting a son, Maria. This was a calculated, multi-hundred-thousand-dollar murder scheme.”

I buried my face in my hands, weeping quietly as the absolute horror of their greed was laid bare.
Rachel Vance placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Maria, Mateo’s family has hired a high-priced defense attorney who is trying to post their bail today. But with this forensic audio and the insurance papers, we are going to make sure neither of them ever steps foot near you or your daughters again.”
