Chapter 2 - The Handcuffs in the HallwayThe sudden shift in the hospital corridor was absolute and terrifying.

Mateo’s smooth, charming facade shattered in a fraction of a second as Deputy Sheriff Jim Miller pinned him face-first against the hospital wall. The loud, metallic clack-clack of steel handcuffs echoed down the quiet wing.

“What the hell is this?!” Mateo roared, struggling against the deputy's heavy grip. “I’m the husband! My wife fell down the stairs! She’s mentally unstable!”

“Shut your mouth, Mr. Cruz,” Deputy Miller barked, forcing Mateo’s arms behind his back. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Beside him, Elena began shrieking in Spanish, grabbing at the second officer’s uniform sleeve. “You can’t touch my son! This is a private family matter! She is a liar! She killed her own baby with her carelessness!”

Deputy Vance, a stern female officer, grabbed Elena’s wrists, twisting them behind her back and snapping a second set of handcuffs around her age-spotted hands. “Ma'am, step back or you will be charged with obstruction of justice!”

In Room 204, I lay in the hospital bed, holding the cracked phone tightly against my chest as Dr. Hayes stood in front of my bed like a protective shield.

Deputy Miller pushed open the hospital door, looking at me with deep professional gravity. “Maria Cruz?”

“Yes, sir,” I rasped, my voice trembling but clear.

“The dispatcher informed us you have digital evidence,” Miller said, pulling a sterile evidence bag from his belt. “We need to secure that device immediately.”

I handed him the cracked Android phone. “There are forty-two audio files saved on the internal memory, Deputy. The last file was recorded three hours ago on the back porch.”

Miller slipped the phone into the evidence bag, sealed it, and turned toward the hallway where Mateo and Elena were being shoved toward the elevator by three additional officers.

As Mateo was dragged past my open doorway, his dark eyes locked onto mine. The arrogant, abusive husband was gone; in his eyes was a desperate, burning terror.

“Maria!” Mateo pleaded, tears of self-pity springing to his eyes. “Tell them it was an accident! Think of our daughters! Who will provide for them if I’m in jail?!”

I looked at the man who had tied me to a pillar every morning, feeling no fear, no regret, and no doubt.

“My daughters will be safe from you,” I said softly.
