CLEAR WATERS / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - Confrontation at DawnWe tore out of the neighborhood with the truck engine roaring, leaving the iron gates of the Whitmore estate behind us forever.

Clara sat in the passenger seat, clutching the chemical box to her chest, her breathing shallow and fast. I kept checking the rearview mirror, expecting Richard’s dark SUV to appear at any moment, but the road behind us stayed empty.

"Where are we going?" she asked, her hands shaking as she looked out at the passing trees.

"To the police station in Santa Barbara," I said, hitting the highway entrance ramp. "And then straight to your lawyer’s office. We hand over the financial records before Richard can use his connections to alter the bank servers."

For the next three hours, everything moved at lightning speed.

We met with Clara’s attorney, a sharp, unyielding woman named Sarah Vance, in a secure office building downtown. When Vance opened the accordion folder and began reviewing the offshore transaction logs, her eyes widened in astonishment.

"This isn't just leverage for a divorce," Vance said, looking up at Clara with immense respect. "This is evidence of federal wire fraud and tax evasion spanning six years. Richard Whitmore isn't going to be suing anyone—he’s going to be fighting to stay out of federal prison."

By mid-afternoon, Vance had filed emergency restraining orders against Richard and delivered the financial evidence directly to federal prosecutors.

When we finally walked out of the law office into the cool coastal afternoon air, the weight that Clara had carried for five long years seemed to evaporate into the breeze.

She looked at me, her eyes brimming with tears, and for the first time since I’d known her, she laughed—a light, joyful sound that echoed down the quiet street.

"We did it," she whispered.

"You did it, Clara," I corrected, smiling back at her. "You stepped into the water."
