Chapter 5 - Shadows at the GateBy the second month, our quiet operation hit a dangerous obstacle.

Richard’s suspicions had been aroused—not by Clara, but by her changing demeanor. She was no longer defeated or timid. She spoke with a quiet confidence that rattled his sense of complete control.
One Tuesday evening, a day before my scheduled visit, I was working late in my shop, cleaning filters, when a black SUV parked across the street from my warehouse. It stayed there for two hours, its engine idling in the darkness.
When I drove home, the SUV followed at a discreet distance, turning off only when I reached my apartment complex.
Richard had put a tail on me.
I immediately called Clara on the burner phone.
"Michael," she answered on the second ring, her voice hushed. "Is everything okay?"
"Richard’s having me followed," I said, pacing my small living room floor. "There was a car outside my shop tonight."
A long silence hung on the line. I could hear Clara’s shaky breath. "I’m so sorry, Michael. I brought you into this nightmare. You need to drop the contract. Walk away before he destroys your business."
"I’m not walking away," I said firmly, surprising even myself with the certainty in my voice. "If I back out now, he wins, and you stay trapped in that house forever."
"Michael..."
"Listen to me," I continued, my heart beating fast. "We accelerate the plan. The lawyer you spoke with said if you can get physical copies of Richard’s offshore tax records from his home safe, you have enough leverage to break the prenuptial agreement and secure a full restraining order."

"The safe is in his private study," Clara whispered. "He keeps the key on his watch stand when he swims his laps at five in the morning."
"Tomorrow is Wednesday," I said. "I’ll be there at seven. Be ready."
