CLEAR WATERS / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - Open HorizonsOne year after the morning at the Whitmore pool.

It was a brilliant summer day. The sky was a clear, vivid blue, and the scent of saltwater filled the air.

I had just finished installing a brand-new saltwater filtration system for a small coastal bed-and-breakfast—my company’s largest contract to date. I packed my tools into the back of my truck, wiped the sweat from my forehead, and smiled at the sight of my company logo printed proudly on the side door.

I drove straight to Carpinteria, pulling into the driveway of Clara’s cottage.

Behind the house, sitting on a cliff overlooking the ocean, was a small, crystal-clear plunge pool we had built together over the spring.

Clara was sitting on the edge of the stone deck, her feet dangling in the cool water. She wore a light floral dress, her sketchbook open on her lap. When she heard my footsteps on the grass, she looked up, her face lighting up with a radiant, beautiful smile.

"Hey, boss," she teased gently, setting her sketchbook aside. "How’s the new contract?"

"Finished," I smiled, walking over and sitting on the stone edge right beside her. I kicked off my boots and dipped my feet into the water alongside hers. "System’s running perfectly. Clear water all around."

Clara leaned her head against my shoulder, her warm hand slipping into mine. Her fingers intertwined with mine—strong, steady, and secure.

"Thank you, Michael," she murmured softly, looking out at the endless horizon where the blue pool water met the ocean sky.

"For what?" I asked, turning to kiss her forehead.

"For looking past the surface," she said, looking into my eyes with deep, unconditional love. "For seeing me when I was invisible."

I smiled, pulling her close into my arms as the gentle waves crashed against the cliffs below. The dark shadows of the past were gone, replaced by a bright, open future built on truth, freedom, and a love that had risen from the clear waters of a fresh start.
