CLEAR WATERS / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Golden CageOver the next three weeks, my Wednesday routine shifted entirely.

I still arrived at seven sharp. I still checked the chlorine, cleaned the skimmers, and brushed the tile lines. But Clara was always there waiting on the patio with two mugs of fresh black coffee.

We talked. At first about simple things—the weather, the coastal air, my plans to expand my small pool service business. But soon, the conversations drifted deeper.

I learned that Clara had grown up in a modest town in Oregon, working as an art restorer before meeting Richard Whitmore at a gallery opening five years ago. Richard was fifty-four, a powerful hedge fund manager whose influence stretched across the entire county. He had swept her off her feet with lavish trips, expensive jewelry, and promises of a quiet, secure life.

"It wasn't a marriage," Clara explained one morning as we sat on the pool lounge chairs while the sun burned off the ocean fog. "It was an acquisition. Richard didn't want a partner. He wanted an object that looked perfect in his living room."

"Why don't you leave?" I asked gently.

Clara let out a hollow laugh, looking down at her coffee mug. "Because Richard doesn't lose things he owns. Three years ago, I packed my bags and hired a lawyer. Before I could even file the papers, Richard froze my credit cards, contacted my former gallery boss to ensure I’d never get another job in the state, and had private investigators follow my family."

My jaw tightened. "That’s control. That’s abuse."

"That’s Richard," she corrected softly. "He told me if I ever tried to divorce him, he’d make sure I ended up with nothing—no money, no career, and a ruined reputation."

I looked at her, feeling a fierce, protective impulse rising in my chest. "He doesn't own you, Clara."

She met my gaze, her eyes searching mine with a sudden, dangerous intensity. "Then help me, Michael. Help me get out."
