Chapter 3 - A Family UnraveledThe blue and red lights of the police cruisers flashed against the elegant glass windows of the estate, casting a cold, rhythmic glow over the living room. Daniel had been loaded into the back of a squad car, his arrogant shouts fading into the quiet suburban night.

Inside, Judith sat on my cream velvet sofa, her hands trembling violently as she clutched a glass of water. Vanessa paced the rug, her expensive silk dress looking suddenly rumpled and pathetic.

"You're a monster, Julia," Judith spat, her voice shaking with rage. "After everything my son has done for you. He gave you this lifestyle!"

"He gave me a broken arm, Judith," I said, sitting in the armchair across from them, my sling resting heavy against my chest. "And as for this lifestyle, let's look at the numbers, shall we?"

Sarah Jenkins opened a folder, spreading financial statements across the coffee table.

"The down payment for this estate was paid entirely by Julia’s inheritance trust," Sarah explained, her voice cool and professional. "The mortgage payments are drawn from her private salary. Daniel’s salary from his consulting firm barely covers his own credit card debt and the monthly allowance he secretly sends to you, Judith."

Vanessa stopped pacing, her face draining of color. "That... that's not true. Daniel told us he bought this house."

"Daniel is a liar, Vanessa," I said, looking her dead in the eye. "Just like he lied about having the funds to bail out your boutique. The eighty thousand dollars he tried to transfer was my money. He tried to steal from me to save you, and when I stopped him, he broke my bones."

"We didn't know," Vanessa whispered, taking a step back. "We thought..."

"You thought I was weak," I interrupted, standing up. "You thought because I loved your son, I would let you walk all over me. But you forgot who I was before I married him. I don't negotiate with thieves."

"The sheriff will be here at 9:00 AM tomorrow to supervise your departure," Sarah added, handing them a formal eviction notice. "If you are not gone, you will be arrested for criminal trespass."

Judith looked at the paper, her eyes filled with a sudden, desperate fear. The luxurious life she had planned to steal from me was evaporating before her eyes, and there was absolutely nothing she could do to stop it.
