Chapter 2 - The Uninvited GuestsThe heavy oak front door swung open, and the irritated scowl on Daniel’s face instantly froze. Standing on the stone porch under the bright security lights were two uniformed police officers, flanked by a tall woman in a sharp navy blue pantsuit holding a leather briefcase.

"Daniel Vance?" the taller officer asked, his hand resting casually near his utility belt.

"Yes?" Daniel stammered, his voice losing its confident edge. "Is there a problem, officer?"

"We're here to execute a domestic violence arrest warrant and a civil protection order," the officer said, stepping past Daniel into the foyer without waiting for an invitation.

From the dining room, Judith’s wineglass shattered against the walnut table as she rushed out, her face pale. "What is the meaning of this? You can't just barge into my son's house!"

"Actually, Mrs. Vance, it is my house," I said, slowly walking out of the dining room. I stood beside the woman in the pantsuit—my attorney, Sarah Jenkins. "And you are currently trespassing."

"Julia, what the hell is this?" Daniel hissed, his eyes darting frantically between me and the officers. He took a step toward me, his hand reaching out. "Stop this childish game right now."

"Step back, sir," the second officer warned, immediately moving to block Daniel. "Do not approach the victim."

Sarah Jenkins stepped forward, pulling a stack of legal documents from her briefcase. "Mr. Vance, your wife has filed a formal complaint detailing the assault on Tuesday night that resulted in a fractured ulna. We have submitted the medical reports from St. Catherine’s, along with the audio recordings taken inside this house over the last forty-eight hours, including the admissions made by your mother and sister tonight."

Vanessa ran out of the kitchen, her eyes wide with terror. "Daniel, do something! They can't do this!"

"Daniel Vance, you are under arrest for domestic assault in the second degree," the first officer said, grabbing Daniel's arms and violently pulling them behind his back. The metal handcuffs clicked into place with a cold, final sound.

"Julia, please!" Daniel yelled, his face turning a deep, angry red as he struggled against the officer’s grip. "You're destroying my family! You promised you fell!"

"I promised to survive, Daniel," I whispered, watching as the officers began to escort him out the door. "And now, I'm taking my house back."
