Chapter 3 - Voices on the Porch

By late afternoon, the shadows lengthened across the lawn, stretching the silhouette of the wooden fence like prison bars over Elena’s face. Evelyn walked down the porch steps carrying a glass of iced tea, the ice clinking cheerfully against the glass.
"Still stubborn?" Evelyn asked, stopping at the edge of the pit. "Your mother-in-law has lived through forty years of marriage by knowing when to keep her mouth shut. You think your college degree makes you better than my son? You came into this family with nothing, and you'll leave with nothing if you don't surrender that deed."
"The house is mine," Elena whispered, fighting for air. "My grandmother left it to me... not Michael."
May you like
"Everything you own belongs to this family now," Evelyn snapped, tipping the glass slightly so a splash of cold tea hit Elena’s cheek before turning away. "You'll stay out here tonight if you don't break."
Under the soil, the microphone picked up every cruel word with crystal clarity. Sarah, listening in the dispatch center, signaled her supervisor. The GPS ping had narrowed the location down to a secluded three-acre property on Ridgecrest Road. Detectives and patrol units were being mobilized silently, avoiding sirens to prevent the suspects from taking drastic measures before officers could arrive.
