Chapter 2 - The Cold Below

The sun climbed steadily, turning the cool morning chill into a suffocating afternoon heat. The weight of the damp soil prevented Elena's lungs from expanding fully. Every breath was a measured, agonizing discipline. Sweat trickled down her forehead, stinging her eyes, while ants and garden gnats crawled along her hairline.

Deep under the dirt, Elena’s right hand was barely mobile. With extreme effort, her index finger pressed against the screen through the plastic bag. The screen vibrated faintly against her collarbone—a tiny, rhythmic pulse confirming that the call had connected and stayed active.

Miles away in the county emergency center, Operator Sarah Miller sat frozen with her headset clamped tightly to her ear. What had started as a suspected open-line glitch had transformed into a horrifying audio feed: the thud of shovels, the cruel reprimands of an older woman, and the raspy gasps of a terrified young mother. Sarah flagged the trace immediately, triangulating the cell tower signal while keeping the line open to capture every second of evidence.

Back in the garden, Mara stepped off the porch and slowly approached the pit while Michael went inside to fetch water.

"You shouldn't have argued with him, Elena," Mara muttered, staring down at her sister-in-law. "If you just agreed to sign over your grandmother's inheritance, none of this would happen."

"Mara... please," Elena gasped, tears carving tracks through the grime on her cheeks. "Look at what he's doing. This isn't discipline... it's murder."

Mara flinched, looking back at the house anxiously before retreating to the porch. Elena felt a faint flutter beneath her ribs. Her unborn child kicked, a fragile spark of life fighting against the crushing weight of the earth.
