Chapter 6 - Breaking the Iron

Julian ripped an industrial bolt cutter from the storage wall, wedging the hardened steel blades against the padlock. With a powerful heave, the lock snapped with a loud crack. He hauled the heavy iron door wide open.

"I’ve got you, Clara," Julian breathed, his hands steady as he knelt on the stained mattress and lifted my trembling, exhausted body into his arms.

"Paramedics! Now!" Julian shouted up the stairs.

Two tactical EMTs sprinted down into the cellar with trauma bags and a stretcher. As they wrapped me in sterile thermal blankets and secured an oxygen mask over my face, Marcus was dragged past the cage in steel handcuffs.

"She’s crazy!" Marcus yelled, his face contorted in a wild, desperate rage. "This is my house! You have no warrant!"

"The warrant was signed two hours ago by the Federal District Judge, Marcus," Julian said coldly, standing over him with icy disdain. "You're done. You and every single person who helped you."

As they wheeled me up into the clean evening air, the flashing blue and red emergency lights illuminated our grand front lawn. I looked up at the open sky, drawing my first breath of real freedom, while inside me, my child fought his final battle to enter the world.
