Chapter 1 - The Steel Cage

The laughter drifting down through the wooden subfloor sounded horribly close, muffled only by thick insulation and layers of polished oak. Above my head, crystal champagne flutes clinked, silver cutlery scraped fine porcelain, and Marcus’s smooth, charming baritone commanded the dinner party.

"Clara is resting up in Aspen with her family," Marcus was telling his business partners for the fifth time that evening. "Doctor's orders—high elevation air and total peace for the final month of her pregnancy. She sends her warmest regards to everyone."

Down in the subterranean darkness of our three-million-dollar estate, I curled onto a stained mattress inside a welded galvanized steel cage. My torn, dirt-stained maternity slip offered no warmth against the freezing concrete floor. I was nine months pregnant, bruised, and starved, my swollen belly aching with every sharp spasm.

Marcus had constructed this cage behind a false partition wall in the cellar storage room weeks ago. When I discovered he had secretly transferred my late father's corporate assets into his private offshore accounts, he didn't argue. He struck me across the face, dragged me down the basement stairs, and padlocked the metal gate shut.

"You exist only until the birth, Clara," Marcus had whispered coldly that first night, sliding a plastic cup of tap water through the wire mesh. "The trust mandates that if you die after giving birth to an heir, sole guardianship and full estate control revert to me. So you're going to deliver my ticket to a hundred million dollars right here."

I pressed my blistered hand against my ribs as my baby kicked, a frantic, tiny heartbeat against the dark. I wasn't just fighting for my own survival anymore. I had to stay alive long enough for someone to hear the truth.
