BURIED BENEATH THE MARBLE / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - Justice Comes HomeIn the weeks that followed, the story of the del Monte estate shocked the nation's headlines.

Investigative journalists uncovered the full extent of Verónica Salazar’s crimes. She had systematically forged legal documents, bribed medical officials, and embezzled millions from the del Monte estate. With overwhelming evidence provided by Ricardo, Clara, and Doña Leonor’s testimony, Verónica was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The corrupted estate staff was replaced, and proper medical care was immediately brought in for Doña Leonor. Within two months of clean air, nutritious food, and the loving care of her son, the matriarch regained her strength and vitality, her regal presence restored.

One sunny afternoon, Ricardo sat in the estate library with his mother and Clara.

"Clara," Ricardo said warmly, placing a heavy leather folder on the coffee table in front of her. "No amount of money can ever repay you for saving my mother's life and saving me from a lifetime of deception."

Clara smiled modestly, her hands resting in her lap. "I only did what was right, Señor Ricardo. I am just glad Doña Leonor is safe."

"You are much more than a maid, Clara," Doña Leonor said gently, taking Clara’s hand into her own and squeezing it tight. "You showed courage when everyone else chose to be blind."

Ricardo opened the folder. "This is a deed to a beautiful house near the town center, fully paid for, along with a permanent trust fund that will cover your mother's medical care and your family's living expenses forever. Additionally, I want to offer you the position of Executive Director of the new Del Monte Charitable Foundation."
