BURIED BENEATH THE MARBLE / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Truth UnraveledThe grand foyer of the mountain estate became a battleground of truth and reckoning.

Verónica ran frantically toward her private office, attempting to clear out her safe—filling a leather bag with stolen bearer bonds, offshore bank keys, and stolen diamonds.

As she rushed back into the main hallway toward the front entrance, she found her path blocked.

Ricardo stood at the base of the grand marble staircase, his clothes covered in cellar dust, his eyes burning with cold, unrelenting justice. Beside him stood Clara, supporting Doña Leonor, who walked weakly but with immense dignity into the bright light of her own home.

"You're not leaving, Verónica," Ricardo said, his voice echoing like thunder through the house.

Verónica drew the revolver again, her hands shaking violently as panic finally shattered her cold composure. "Get out of my way, Ricardo! I will shoot you! I swear I will!"

Suddenly, sirens blared in the distance—wailing red and blue lights flashing through the high glass windows of the driveway.

Clara had used the kitchen landline minutes before going down to the cellar to alert the local authorities of an ongoing kidnapping and hostage emergency on the estate.

Verónica’s eyes darted wildly toward the windows. "No... no, this can't be happening!"

"Put the gun down!" loud voices boomed from the front doors as armed police officers kicked open the entrance, weapons raised and trained directly on Verónica. "Drop your weapon! Now!"

Verónica looked from the police officers to Ricardo, then to Doña Leonor, whose strong, piercing gaze matched her son's. Realizing that her empire of lies had completely collapsed, Verónica's hands lost their grip.

The revolver clattered loudly onto the polished marble floor.

Police officers rushed in, pinning Verónica to the ground and pulling her arms behind her back in steel handcuffs. As she was dragged away, screaming curses and denials, Doña Leonor stood tall, breathing in the clean, fresh air of the home she had built.
