Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Cellar Door"Did you really think a nosey little maid could play hero in my house?" Verónica’s voice cut through the damp cellar air like a honed razor.

Clara backed against the cold stone wall, covering her mouth in shock as her heart hammered in her throat. Behind the rusted iron bars, Doña Leonor shrank back into the shadows, shivering in her torn dress.
"Señora Verónica..." Clara stammered, her voice shaking. "I... I heard someone crying. I didn't know—"
"You didn't know your place," Verónica interrupted smoothly, stepping closer. The faint light from the passage illuminated her flawless, sculpted features, twisting them into something cruel. "You were hired to clean floors, Clara. Not to dig up things that were meant to stay buried."
Verónica reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy brass padlock, snapping it shut onto the main latch of the gate. She turned her piercing gaze back to Clara, evaluating her options with terrifying calmness.
"I could fire you right now," Verónica murmured, leaning in so close Clara could smell her expensive rose perfume. "I could call the police and say I caught you stealing heirloom jewelry. Who do you think they will believe? A penniless maid with a sick mother... or the lady of the estate?"
Clara felt the cold weight of terror settle in her stomach. Her mother’s medical treatments depended entirely on her monthly paycheck. If she were arrested or fired without pay, her mother wouldn't survive the month.
"I won't say anything," Clara whispered, lowering her eyes in fake submission. "I swear, ma'am. Please don't fire me."

Verónica smiled—a slow, triumphant look of complete control. "Good girl. You will finish your shift upstairs. And if you so much as glance toward this stairwell again, you won't just lose your job. I will make sure your family loses everything."
As Verónica escorted Clara back up the dark steps, locking the heavy wooden cellar door behind them, Clara kept her head down. But behind her quiet demeanor, a burning fire ignited. She had seen the raw terror in Doña Leonor’s eyes. She knew that staying silent meant leaving an innocent woman to die in the dark.
