BEYOND THE SILENT MANSION / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - Shadows of the AccidentThe discovery of Benson’s corporate betrayal opened a floodgate in Henry’s mind. If the brother-in-law he trusted had been stealing from him while he lay broken in bed, what else had been lied about?

The following afternoon, Henry called his private investigator, a trusted old friend named Frank Miller. Sitting in the study with Leah present, Henry instructed Frank to reopen the file on the car accident that had taken Caroline’s life.

"Henry, the police report was closed four months ago," Frank said gently over the speakerphone. "It was ruled a hit-and-run by an unidentified commercial truck."

"Check Benson's financial records from that week," Henry ordered, his eyes sharp and focused. "Check Diana’s phone logs. Look at every contract signed three days before and three days after the crash."

While Frank conducted his investigation, Henry made a decision that shocked the household: he called his physical therapist back.

The next day, the therapist arrived. The sessions were brutal. Henry shouted through the pain, his face drenched in sweat as he forced his damaged nerves and weak muscles to work.

Leah stayed by his side during every grueling session. When his legs gave out and he nearly fell, she caught him. When he wanted to quit, she stood in front of him with her hands on her hips and refused to let him give up.

"You built bridges across the Charles River, Henry Clark," she told him firmly as he panted on the parallel bars. "You can take one step."

Grit. Determination. Pain.

And slowly, miraculously, three weeks into the intense therapy, Henry’s left big toe twitched.

Leah gasped, dropping to her knees beside his feet. "Henry! Look!"

Henry stared down at his foot. He tried again. The toe moved clearly.

Tears sprang into Henry's eyes—not tears of weakness, but of overwhelming hope. He reached down, grabbing Leah’s face in his hands, and pulled her into a tight, breathless hug. "I felt it," he breathed against her neck. "Leah, I felt it."
