Chapter 7 - The Fall of the House of VanceThe arrest of Garrick Vance made front-page news across North Texas. Headlines dominated local and national feeds: “Prominent Dallas Hedge Fund Manager Arrested at Deposition for $2.4M Church Embezzlement and Spousal Endangerment.”

The video footage from our master bathroom was leaked to major media outlets forty-eight hours later. Public outrage was swift, overwhelming, and merciless.

The congregation of the Christian Heritage Church erupted in fury. Pastor Thomas held an emergency board meeting that Sunday morning, where the board voted unanimously to strip Miriam Vance of all her committee positions, cancel her church membership, and initiate a civil lawsuit to recover every penny stolen from the charitable funds.

Miriam’s social standing vanished overnight. Her wealthy high-society friends turned their backs on her, refusing to answer her calls or contribute to Garrick’s legal defense fund. The grand suburban house in Dallas was placed under a federal asset forfeiture lien, forcing Miriam to move out with three suitcases into a tiny rented apartment on the outskirts of town.

Three months after the arrest, I stood inside the Dallas County Probate Court for the final settlement hearing.

I was accompanied by Marcus and my legal team. I looked radiant, wearing a tailored navy suit. My physical recovery was complete; my scars were fading, my drains long gone, and my strength fully restored through proper physical therapy and nourishing care.

Garrick was brought into the courtroom in bright orange prison scrubs, his hands cuffed at his waist. He had lost twenty pounds in county jail, his hair unkempt, his eyes hollowed out by fear and regret.

His public defender attempted to plead for a reduction in bail, citing Garrick’s lack of previous criminal records.

Judge Katherine Harris looked down from the bench with zero sympathy.

“Mr. Vance,” Judge Harris said, her voice booming through the silent courtroom. “The evidence presented in this court demonstrates a pattern of sociopathic cruelty, financial predation, and severe physical endangerment against a vulnerable spouse recovering from life-saving surgery. You exploited religious charities to line your own pockets and treated your wife’s illness with utter contempt.”

The judge slammed her gavel down with a sharp crack.

“The spousal dissolution is granted immediately,” Judge Harris ordered. “All joint marital assets, including the Dallas estate, liquid accounts, and investment portfolios, are awarded entirely to Maya Sterling as restitution for severe emotional and physical torts. Furthermore, Mr. Vance will remain remanded in federal custody without bail pending his criminal trial.”

Garrick looked over at me as the guards turned him around to lead him back to the holding cell. Tears welled in his eyes, his lips trembling.

“Maya...” he whispered, his voice cracking. “I’m sorry... please forgive me...”

I looked at him calmly, feeling no anger, no hatred—only a vast, peaceful indifference.

“I forgive you, Garrick,” I said softly. “Because you no longer matter to me at all.”
