Chapter 3 - The Storm ArrivesTwo black Cadillac Escalades and a white medical transport van screeched to a halt on the manicured front lawn of the Vance residence, tearing deep tire ruts into the pristine Bermuda grass.

Garrick paused in the hallway, his brow furrowing as he walked over to the landing window. Miriam rushed out of the kitchen, horrified by the noise.
“What in God’s name is happening on our lawn?” Miriam gasped, clutching her throat.
Before Garrick could answer, the front double doors of the house were violently shoved open. Three men in sharp black suits stepped into the foyer, followed immediately by four uniformed paramedics carrying an emergency medical stretcher and trauma kits.
Behind them stepped Marcus Sterling.
He looked imposing in a charcoal three-piece suit, his sharp jawline set in stone, his dark eyes radiating pure, lethal authority. Beside him walked Dr. Elizabeth Chen, one of the top chief legal-medical examiners in the state.
“What is the meaning of this intruder breach?!” Miriam shouted, strutting into the foyer with her chin held high. “This is private property! I am calling the sheriff!”
Marcus didn't even look at her. He swept past her as if she were invisible, his polished dress shoes clicking heavily against the foyer marble.
“Who the hell do you think you are?!” Garrick yelled, rushing down the stairs to block the landing. “Get out of my house!”
Marcus stopped at the base of the stairs. He looked up at Garrick with a expression so cold it could have frozen steel.
“Garrick,” Marcus said softly, his voice echoing through the high ceilings. “You have exactly five seconds to get out of my way before my security detail physically removes you from these premises.”
“This is my home! That is my wife!” Garrick barked, stepping down a stair. “She is suffering from postpartum and post-surgical hysteria! You have no legal right—”
Marcus didn't wait for five seconds. He gave a single, curt nod to the two security guards behind him.
Before Garrick could react, two former SWAT operators bounded up the stairs, grabbed Garrick by his arms, and forcefully pinned him against the wall, snapping a pair of heavy zip-ties around his wrists.
“Hey! Let go of me! This is assault! Mom!” Garrick screamed, struggling uselessly against the grip of the guards.
“Garrick!” Miriam shrieked, charging forward, but the third security guard stepped into her path, holding up a hand.
“Ma’am, sit down and remain silent,” the guard stated firmly.
Marcus ignored their shouting and ran straight up the stairs to the master bathroom. He knocked gently on the door.
“Maya,” Marcus said softly, his voice transforming from stone to gentleness. “It’s Marcus. I’m here. Open the door, baby sister.”
Inside, tears flooded my eyes. I reached up, unlocked the door, and pulled it open.
When Marcus saw me—pale, covered in sweat, holding a blood-stained robe over my chest with drainage tubes hanging loose—his breath caught in his throat. The rage that flickered across his face was terrifying, but he immediately knelt down, wrapping a warm, strong arm gently around my shoulders.
“I’ve got you,” he whispered, kissing the top of my head. “I’ve got you, Maya. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
Dr. Chen rushed into the bathroom with the paramedics. She quickly assessed my incisions and drained fluids, her expression darkening with professional fury.
“Her surgical sites are severely compromised,” Dr. Chen reported to Marcus. “One of her primary JP drains has been violently tugged, causing internal tearing. She’s in acute physical shock and lacking essential post-operative analgesics.”
Marcus stood up, his hand resting on my shoulder as the paramedics carefully lifted me onto the stretcher. He turned his gaze toward Garrick, who was still pinned against the hallway wall.
“Where are her pain medications, Garrick?” Marcus asked, his tone dangerously low.
Garrick swallowed hard, panic finally cracking through his arrogant facade. “She... she was abusing them! Mom disposed of them for her own good!”
Dr. Chen pulled an evidence bag and a digital camera from her kit. “I’m taking samples from the toilet bowl and the bathroom sink immediately. Withholding prescribed post-surgical narcotics from a recovering double-mastectomy patient constitutes felony medical abuse and aggravated endangerment.”

Marcus leaned close to Garrick’s face.
“You wanted her to mow the lawn, Garrick?” Marcus whispered. “By the time I’m done with you and your mother, you won't even own the lawn mower.”
