BEYOND THE SHADOWS OF FAITH / Chapter 4 / 60

Chapter 4 - Sanctuary and StrategyThe helicopter ride from the private helipad in Dallas back to Texas Medical Center in Houston was a blur of warm blankets, intravenous pain relief, and the soothing sound of Marcus’s voice.

By midnight, I was settled into a private, high-security suite on the hospital’s executive floor. The room was warm and quiet, filled with fresh flowers and guarded by two private security officers stationed outside the door. Dr. Chen had personally re-dressed my surgical wounds, secured the drainage tubes, and administered proper, controlled pain management.

For the first time in two weeks, the agonizing fire in my chest subsided into a manageable hum. I lay against the soft white pillows, looking at the IV drip, while Marcus sat in an armchair beside my bed, an open laptop resting on his knees.

“How are you feeling?” he asked softly, closing the laptop and reaching out to hold my hand.

“Human again,” I whispered, tears brimming in my eyes. “Marcus... I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry for cutting you out five years ago. Garrick... he made me believe you were trying to control my life.”

Marcus squeezed my hand gently, shaking his head. “You don't ever apologize to me, Maya. Classic domestic abusers always isolate their targets from their support systems first. Garrick knew that as long as I was in your life, he couldn't control you. I should have fought harder to stay.”

“What’s going to happen now?” I asked nervously. “Miriam has connections with the county judge in Dallas. Her family donates millions to the church and the local political action committees.”

A dark, confident smile touched Marcus’s lips. He pulled a sleek black tablet from his briefcase.

“Miriam Vance thinks she owns Dallas,” Marcus said smoothly. “She forgets that I own the law firm that handles the forensic audits for three of the major banks in North Texas.”

He opened a file on the tablet, revealing complex financial flowcharts and bank statements.

“When you called me today, I didn't just order a helicopter,” Marcus explained, his eyes glinting with tactical intellect. “I put my entire financial forensic team on the Vance family. Do you know what we found in less than three hours, Maya?”

I shook my head.

“Garrick isn't just a hedge fund manager,” Marcus revealed. “He’s the treasurer for Miriam’s beloved 'Christian Heritage Foundation'—the tax-exempt charity they use to host those grand barbecues and fund their high-society political clout.”

Marcus leaned forward, lowering his voice. “Over the past four years, Garrick has embezzled over 2.4 million dollars from that foundation to cover his own failed margin calls on crypto investments and high-risk derivatives. And do you know whose name he put on the secondary shell company in Delaware to hide the trail?”

My stomach dropped. “Mine?”

“He tried to,” Marcus smiled coldly. “He forged your signature on three corporate authorization forms while you were in the hospital undergoing your biopsy three months ago.”

I gasped, sitting up slightly before the chest pain reminded me to stay still. “He tried to frame me for his theft?”

“He planned to use your 'mental instability' and 'drug addiction' narrative to discredit you if the IRS ever came knocking,” Marcus said. “That’s why they threw away your medical supplies, Maya. They weren't just being cruel—they were deliberately building a paper trail to portray you as an unstable, addicted wreck who was mishandling family finances.”

I stared at my brother in utter disbelief. The sheer depth of Garrick’s calculation was terrifying.

“So what do we do?” I asked.

Marcus closed the tablet with a sharp snap.

“We don't just file for divorce, Maya,” Marcus declared. “We execute a complete, systematic destruction of their entire empire.”
