BENEATH THE RAIN AND GLASS / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - Rebuilding Broken BridgesOver the next six months, life transformed in ways none of them could have anticipated.

Diego took over the new division at Azteca, bringing a grounded, human approach to corporate security that earned him the immense respect of the entire company. He moved with Sofia into a bright, beautiful home near a top-rated elementary school, funded by his well-deserved executive salary.

Yet, despite his success, Diego remained the same grounded, caring man who had offered three hundred pesos to a stranger in the rain.

And Valentina changed too. The cold, unyielding armor of the corporate titan softened. She began leaving the office by five o’clock. She spent weekends away from her laptop, often found at the local park watching Sofia play soccer, or sitting in Diego's sunlit kitchen learning how to bake homemade bread.

One rainy Saturday afternoon, Valentina stood on the porch of Diego's house, holding a warm cup of tea. Rain fell over the garden, echoing the storm from six months prior.

Diego walked out, draping his jacket over her shoulders just as he had done in the alley.

Valentina turned, burying her face into his chest, smelling the familiar, comforting scent of coffee and clean soap. Diego wrapped his strong arms around her, holding her close against the cool air.

"You don't look like a woman running from a storm anymore," Diego murmured into her hair.

"Because I found my shelter," Valentina replied, looking up to kiss his cheek.
