BENEATH THE RAIN AND GLASS / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - A Quiet AwakeningThroughout the day, Diego's apartment served as the secret war room for Farmacéutica Azteca's rightful leader. While Mateo tracked financial records, Valentina worked tirelessly on her new laptop, assembling ironclad proof that Rodrigo had forged the documents accusing her of embezzlement.

Despite the high-stakes corporate battle, the rhythm of Diego's household kept Valentina grounded. When Diego returned from dropping Sofia at school, he brought Valentina an ice pack for her ankle without a word. He didn't treat her like a billionaire titan; he treated her like a woman carrying a heavy burden.

In the late afternoon, as Mateo stepped outside to make secure calls, Valentina watched Diego repair a broken desk lamp in the kitchen.

"Why didn't you ever apply for higher management positions in security?" she asked gently. "You have incredible observational skills and leadership."

Diego smiled faintly, wiping grease from his hands. "When my wife died, Sofia was three. High-paying executive protection jobs required sixty hours a week and constant travel. I chose a quiet night-shift guard job at a local logistics firm so I could walk my daughter to school every morning and put her to bed every night. Money is great, Valentina, but time is something you can never buy back."

The words struck Valentina deep in her soul. She had traded her youth, her peace, and her personal life for corporate dominance, only to be betrayed by the very people she enriched.

"You're a remarkable father, Diego," she whispered softly.

Diego looked up, meeting her gaze. The air between them grew thick with an unspoken, powerful warmth—a connection forged not in luxury, but in shared respect and vulnerability.
