Chapter 8 - The Hammer of JusticeThe federal jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When the court reassembled for the reading of the verdict, the atmospheric tension in the room was electric.
Judge Harold Ross stood at the bench, holding the official verdict sheets.
“On count one, Attempted Premeditated Murder in the First Degree,” Judge Ross read aloud, his voice booming through the room. “We find the defendant, Marcus Blackwood, GUILTY.”
A wave of emotional gasps and cheers broke out in the gallery.
“On count two, Aggravated Kidnapping and Torture, we find the defendant, Marcus Blackwood, GUILTY.”
Marcus slumped forward onto the defense table, covering his face with his hands, sobbing hysterically as thirty consecutive guilty verdicts were read against him—human trafficking, felony child endangerment, grand larceny, and corporate fraud.
“On count one, Conspiracy to Commit Murder and Torture,” Judge Ross continued, looking down at Eleanor. “We find the defendant, Eleanor Blackwood, GUILTY.”
Eleanor let out a sharp, choked gasp before fainting backward into her seat.
Two weeks later, during the formal sentencing hearing, Judge Ross delivered his final judgment with zero leniency.
“Marcus Blackwood,” Judge Ross declared, slamming his gavel down with thunderous force. “Your actions represent an extraordinary depth of human depravity, cruelty, and unbridled greed. I sentence you to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at ADX Florence Federal Penitentiary.”
“Eleanor Blackwood, you are sentenced to forty years in federal prison without the possibility of early release.”

As federal marshals chained Marcus to lead him away to his permanent cell, he turned toward me one last time, tears streaming down his face, mouthing: “Clara... please...”
I didn't utter a word. I simply stood up, adjusted my jacket, and walked out of the courtroom into the warm afternoon sun without looking back once.
