BENEATH THE MARBLE FLOORS / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Breach at Blackwood ManorThe basement dissolved into chaotic noise, blinding white tactical lights, and shouting.

Marcus didn't even have time to stand up before two heavy tactical officers tackled him into the concrete floor, pinning his arms behind his back with sharp metallic clicks of handcuffs.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Marcus roared, his face pressed hard against the cold floor. “I am Marcus Blackwood! You are trespassing on private property!”

“Shut your mouth!” an officer barked, hoisting him up by his collar.

At the top of the stairs, Eleanor let out a high-pitched, horrified shriek as deputies restrained her, pulling the gold chain and brass key from her neck. The high-society dinner guests who had been enjoying champagne upstairs spilled into the hallway, their faces pale with absolute horror as they witnessed the horror hidden beneath the mansion's polished hardwood floors.

A female tactical paramedic rushed over to the cage, inspecting the heavy arc welds securing the iron door.

“We need a portable rotary saw down here immediately!” she yelled up the stairs. “Patient is in active labor and suffering from severe physical trauma!”

I lay on the metal floor, my body shivering uncontrollably from shock, cold, and intense labor contractions.

Through the chaos, a familiar figure pushed past the officers at the doorway.

“Clara!”

It was my sister, Elena. She dropped to her knees right outside the iron bars, her hands reaching through the mesh to hold my raw, bruised fingers. Tears streamed down her face as she looked at my hollow cheeks and blood-stained skin.

“I got your message,” Elena wept, her voice shaking violently. “The audio file... oh God, Clara... I took it straight to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They’ve been tracking Marcus’s financial accounts for three days while securing an emergency search warrant.”

“The... the baby, Elena...” I choked out, a fresh wave of agony tearing through my pelvis. “Help my baby...”

A firefighter rushed down the stairs holding a heavy power cutter. Sparks rained across the concrete floor as the steel blade sliced through the thick welds securing the cage door. Within ninety seconds, the heavy iron panel was pulled away.

The paramedics carefully lifted my frail, light body onto an emergency vacuum stretcher, wrapping my frozen limbs in thermal blankets while hooking up IV lines to my arms.

As they wheeled my stretcher past Marcus, who was being held against the concrete wall by two federal agents, I looked him dead in his eyes.

The arrogant, untouchable billionaire was gone. In his eyes was the first real flicker of blind, helpless terror.

“The phone, Marcus,” I rasped, my voice barely above a whisper, holding up the small, plastic-wrapped device tucked in my hand. “It recorded every single word.”
