BENEATH THE MARBLE FLOORS / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Paper FortressFor the next ten days, I remained under 24-hour federal guard in the hospital’s high-security wing.

Under the dedicated care of nutritionists and burn specialists, my physical wounds began to heal. My skin regained its color, the swelling around my eye faded, and the physical strength that Marcus had spent months draining from my body slowly returned.

My baby daughter lay in a heated bassinet beside my bed. I named her Hope.

Whenever I held Hope against my chest, feeling her soft breathing and warm skin, the terror of those dark nights in the basement melted away, replaced by an invincible, burning determination to see justice delivered.

On a quiet Thursday morning, Agent David Miller walked into my hospital room, accompanied by a sharp-suited woman holding a heavy leather briefcase—Victoria Sterling, one of the top federal prosecutors in the state.

Victoria set her briefcase on the table, looking at me with deep professional respect.

“Mrs. Blackwood,” Victoria began softly. “Marcus’s high-powered defense attorneys have spent the last forty-eight hours trying to post his fifty-million-dollar bail. They claimed you were suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and fabricated the basement cage as a psychiatric delusion.”

I let out a low, cold laugh, looking down at the faint, silver scars on my wrists.

“Let them try that argument in court, Ms. Sterling,” I said, my voice steady and firm.

Victoria smiled grimly, pulling a thick stack of printed documents from her briefcase.

“They dropped that defense thirty minutes ago,” Victoria revealed. “Because your hidden phone didn't just record audio, Clara. The internal camera captured high-definition video files every time the screen lit up.”

She turned a laptop toward me, displaying crisp, crystal-clear footage recorded from the loose steel floor panel.

The video clearly showed Eleanor standing over the cage, withholding water while I begged, and Marcus striking the bars with a heavy iron pipe while boasting about his offshore accounts.

“We have authenticated forty-seven separate video files,” Victoria stated. “Along with the physical welds recovered from the basement floor, the toxicological reports showing forced chemical sedation, and the complete paper trail of his offshore wire transfers.”

“What is the District Attorney charging them with?” I asked.

“Marcus Blackwood and Eleanor Blackwood are facing twenty-eight federal counts,” Victoria declared sharply. “Including attempted premeditated murder, aggravated kidnapping, human trafficking, felony child abuse, and multi-million-dollar financial fraud.”

I looked at Agent Miller. “Are they staying in jail?”

“The federal judge revoked bail entirely an hour ago,” Miller confirmed. “Marcus and his mother will remain in maximum-security federal custody until their trial.”
