BENEATH THE MARBLE FLOORS / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - Tearing Down Blackwood ManorWith Marcus and Eleanor locked away awaiting their formal trial, the news of the Blackwood scandal dominated national news media.

Headlines blasted Marcus Blackwood’s image across television screens and internet headers: “The Monster of Blackwood Manor: Billionaire and Mother Indicted for Basement Cage Torture and Offshore Trafficking.”

Public outrage was swift, absolute, and merciless.

The board of directors at Blackwood Enterprises voted unanimously to remove Marcus from all corporate positions, liquidate his remaining stock options to pay federal restitution fines, and rename the firm.

Two months after the deposition, I purchased the deed to Blackwood Manor from the federal asset auction using my fully reclaimed inheritance funds.

On a bright, sunny Tuesday morning, I stood on the front lawn of the sprawling estate.

Beside me stood Elena, holding six-month-old Hope in her arms, along with Agent David Miller and Victoria Sterling.

A heavy yellow demolition excavator sat parked in the circular driveway, its massive steel engine idling loudly.

“Are you sure you want to do this, Clara?” Elena asked softly, looking at the looming stone mansion.

“I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life,” I replied firmly.

I signaled to the construction foreman.

The heavy steel claw of the excavator surged forward, smashing into the front stone pillars of Blackwood Manor with a thunderous roar. Glass shattered, stone crumbled, and within three hours, the magnificent mansion that had concealed such horrific cruelty was reduced to a pile of worthless rubble.

Over the next four months, I funded a complete transformation of the property.

The dark basement was filled with clean earth, and where the mansion had once stood, we built the Hope Vance Sanctuary—a state-of-the-art, high-security recovery center for women and children surviving domestic torture and human trafficking.

Where the welded cage had rested in the dark concrete basement, we planted a magnificent glass atrium filled with white roses, lavender, and sunlight.

I had destroyed my grave and turned it into a sanctuary of life.
