Chapter 6 - The Man Who Connected Both Families|

Richard Bell had disappeared from the Vitale family's business records fourteen months earlier.
Officially, he had retired and moved to Florida. He had sold his apartment, closed his office, and transferred his remaining investments into a private holding company.
But Dominic found no reliable evidence that he had ever arrived in Florida.
"His phone was disconnected," Dominic reported. "His last known address is registered to a property company in New Jersey."
Alessandro stood at his office window.
"How did he get close to Daniel?"
"Richard introduced Harbor Crest to several restaurant clients. He may have arranged the Bellissimo audit."
"And Russo?"
"Richard helped establish the original investment partnership."
Alessandro turned.
"Why didn't I know?"
"Because the partnership was listed as a legitimate restaurant development project. Your approval was attached to a general investment authorization, not the individual transactions."
Alessandro's expression hardened.
"Who reviewed the documents?"
"Marcus Hale, the former financial controller."
"Find him."
Dominic hesitated.
"Marcus died last year."
"Everyone connected to this case seems to disappear."
"That's why I think we need to bring in federal investigators."
Alessandro nodded.
He had spent years believing he could separate the family's lawful business interests from the criminal operations that had surrounded his childhood. He had built companies, hired professional accountants, and created layers of oversight.
Yet Daniel's records suggested that someone had used those legitimate structures as cover.
And Natalie had been placed in the middle of it.
At the apartment, Natalie sat with Margaret Ellis.
Margaret had insisted on visiting after hearing what happened. She looked tired but was recovering.
"I should have told you about the payroll deductions earlier," Margaret said.
"You didn't know what they meant."
"I knew something was wrong. Anthony kept telling us that the restaurant was struggling, but every month he bought another expensive car."
Natalie smiled faintly.
"That sounds familiar."
Margaret reached across the table.
"You stood up for me when nobody else did. I won't forget that."
Natalie looked down.
"I just couldn't watch him treat you like that."
"That's why he slapped you. You made him look small in front of people whose opinions he cared about."
The words stayed with Natalie.
She had spent years believing that keeping her head down was the safest way to survive.
Daniel had once told her that doing the right thing didn't always feel brave. Sometimes it simply meant refusing to pretend you hadn't seen something.
She missed him terribly.
Margaret noticed her expression.
"Your husband would be proud of you."
Natalie looked toward the bedroom.
"I wish he were here."
A knock interrupted them.
Dominic stood outside.
He had come alone, carrying a printed report.
"We identified the person in the photograph," he said. "The man with Daniel and Russo was Richard Bell."
Natalie nodded.
"Alessandro told me."
Dominic placed the report on the table.
"There's something you should know. Bell was not only connected to the investment partnership. He also signed a contract with Harbor Crest shortly before Daniel died."
"What kind of contract?"
"An agreement to provide financial records for an independent review. Daniel was assigned to examine the documents."
Natalie read the page.
A line near the bottom caught her attention.
Consultant responsible for delivery of original records: Daniel Parker.
She looked up.
"Daniel was bringing evidence to Richard?"
"That's what it appears to show."
"Then why did Richard meet Anthony?"
Dominic did not answer.
Natalie studied the dates.
Daniel had died two days after the meeting shown in the photograph.
A cold thought settled in her mind.
"What if Daniel had already given them the evidence?"
Dominic frowned.
"Possible."
"And what if the person who was supposed to receive it betrayed him?"
Dominic's expression changed.
He turned to the final page of the report.
A handwritten note appeared beside Richard's signature.
Delivery confirmed. Original package transferred.
Natalie felt her pulse quicken.
"Transferred to whom?"
Dominic looked at the name.
May you like
Then he quietly closed the folder.
"Anthony Russo."
