Chapter 16 - The Man Who Followed Daniel|

The attempted transfers were blocked after investigators obtained emergency preservation orders.

Frank was not arrested immediately. He was asked to provide documents and attend a formal interview, while detectives continued building the case.

Richard Bell, however, had become more difficult to locate.

His New Jersey property had been abandoned. His bank accounts showed no recent activity. His phone had not been used in weeks.

Then Olivia Grant called.

She contacted Detective Hayes through an attorney and agreed to provide a statement.

Olivia was living under a different name in a small town outside Pittsburgh. She had left Pennsylvania shortly after Daniel's death and had avoided everyone connected to Harbor Crest.

She had the original ledger.

When she arrived for the interview, she looked at Natalie with tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry," she said.

Natalie stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because I knew Daniel was in danger, and I didn't tell you everything."

Olivia explained that she had discovered the false investment accounts while working at Harbor Crest. Daniel had asked her to help verify the transactions.

They found that Anthony Russo had been using Bellissimo's payroll system to generate false expenses. Richard Bell had arranged the investment network, while Frank Vitale provided access to certain financial channels.

Olivia had copied the original ledger.

Daniel planned to deliver it to an independent investigator.

But the night before his death, Richard found out.

"He told me to hand over the ledger," Olivia said. "I refused. Daniel said he would get me somewhere safe."

"Did you meet him?" Natalie asked.

"Yes. At the restaurant."

"Was Anthony there?"

"Yes."

Olivia lowered her eyes.

"I thought Daniel had an arrangement with Richard. I didn't know Anthony was waiting for him."

Natalie felt sick.

"What happened?"

"Daniel left the restaurant with a copy of the records. I stayed behind because I thought Richard was going to help me escape."

Olivia paused.

"Then I heard them arguing in the parking lot."

"What did they say?"

"Daniel told Richard that he had sent the evidence to someone outside the family. Richard said he had betrayed everyone who had trusted him."

Natalie's hands tightened.

"Did you see them hurt him?"

Olivia shook her head.

"No. I left before anything happened. But later that night, I heard Daniel had died."

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

"I was scared. Richard told me that if I spoke, he would make sure nobody believed me. He said he had friends everywhere."

Olivia opened her bag and produced a sealed ledger.

"This is the original."

Detective Hayes secured it.

The entries showed transfers from Bellissimo to a series of shell companies, then to accounts controlled by North Star Security. Some money had been routed through businesses connected to Frank.

There were also handwritten notes indicating that payments had been made to monitor Daniel and Olivia.

One entry was dated the day Daniel died.

Beside it was a short notation:

Parker — final contact.

Natalie looked away.

Alessandro stood behind her, his face pale.

"Did Richard cause the accident?" he asked.

Olivia shook her head.

"I don't know. But I heard him say that Daniel would never make it to the meeting."

Detective Hayes leaned forward.

"Did you hear anything else?"

Olivia nodded.

"Richard said he had arranged for someone to follow Daniel home."

The room fell silent.

Natalie felt her legs weaken.

Then Olivia added the detail that changed everything.

"The person driving the second car that night wasn't Richard."

May you like

She looked at Alessandro.

"It was Frank Vitale."
