Chapter 17 - The Night Daniel Died|

Natalie had imagined this moment many times.

She had imagined discovering a hidden enemy, finding a witness, or uncovering a document that explained why Daniel's death had never made sense.

She had not imagined hearing that her own family might have been connected to the car that followed him.

Alessandro sat beside her.

He did not touch her.

Detective Hayes asked Olivia to repeat the statement carefully and identify what she had personally witnessed.

Olivia explained that she had been waiting outside the restaurant when Daniel left. She saw Richard speak to Frank near the parking area. A dark vehicle followed Daniel's car after he turned onto the main road.

She could not see the driver clearly, but she recognized the vehicle.

It belonged to Frank's company.

The next morning, she heard that Daniel had died.

She had not known whether the two events were connected until she saw the financial records.

"Did you tell anyone?" Natalie asked.

"I sent an anonymous message to Harbor Crest. It was deleted."

"Why didn't you contact me?"

Olivia looked down.

"I was afraid. I thought if I stayed away, they would leave you alone."

Natalie turned toward the window.

She wanted to be angry with Olivia.

But she understood fear.

She had been afraid when Anthony raised his hand. She had been afraid when the strange messages arrived. She had been afraid every time she saw someone standing too long outside her apartment.

Fear had made people silent.

And silence had allowed the scheme to continue.

Detective Hayes arranged for Olivia's statement to be formally recorded. She also requested that the original ledger be examined and compared with the financial records already recovered.

Meanwhile, Dominic located an old vehicle registration connected to Frank's company.

The car had been sold shortly after Daniel's death.

Its maintenance records were missing.

But a traffic camera archive had preserved a partial image from the night of the accident. It showed a dark sedan following Daniel's vehicle at a distance.

The image was not clear enough to identify the driver.

However, the license plate matched a company vehicle registered to North Star Security.

The investigation now had a chain of evidence:

Daniel had discovered the fraudulent financial network.

Richard had arranged the surveillance.

Frank had been connected to the vehicle that followed Daniel.

Anthony had received false records and benefited from the scheme.

Olivia had preserved the original ledger.

It was still necessary to establish what happened on the road that night.

Natalie returned to her apartment that evening with Alessandro.

He stood by the window while she sat on the couch.

"Frank was family," she said.

"I know."

"Daniel trusted that you would protect him."

Alessandro closed his eyes.

"I should have known someone was using my name."

"You can't protect everyone."

"No. But I could have listened when Daniel tried to warn us."

Natalie looked at him.

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I was proud. I thought the people around me were loyal. I believed my systems were secure."

She looked down at her belly.

"That's how Daniel died."

Alessandro did not argue.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then his phone rang.

Dominic's name appeared.

Alessandro answered.

"What?"

Dominic's voice was urgent.

"Boss, the investigators found the original vehicle. It's been sitting in a private garage under a false ownership record."

"And?"

"They recovered a damaged camera unit from inside."

Alessandro stood.

"What does it show?"

May you like

Dominic hesitated.

"Daniel's car didn't leave the road by itself."
