Chapter 14 - The Promise Daniel Left Behind|

Daniel's face filled the screen.

He looked exhausted, but he smiled when he said Natalie's name.

"Hey, sweetheart. I hope you never have to watch this."

Natalie began to cry.

Daniel continued.

"I found something in the financial records that doesn't belong to me. It concerns a trust created years ago by the Vitale family. I don't know all the details, but I believe someone has been using it to hide money and protect certain people."

He looked down briefly.

"Your brother may not know about it. But the person controlling the trust has been moving money through companies connected to Bellissimo."

Natalie pressed a hand to her mouth.

Daniel took a breath.

"I also found a document listing the beneficiaries of the trust. One of the names is yours."

Alessandro leaned closer to the screen.

"What?"

Daniel continued.

"I don't know why. I don't know who added you or when. But your name appears beside a provision that protects any child you have."

Natalie stared at the screen.

The document appeared in the next frame.

It was an old trust agreement signed years earlier by Alessandro's father.

The agreement had been created to protect certain family assets from unlawful seizure. It also contained a provision allowing a descendant who chose to leave the family business to receive independent financial protection.

Natalie's name had been added before she married Daniel.

The trust was not a reward for being part of the family.

It was designed to ensure that someone who rejected the criminal side of the family would not be financially controlled by it.

Daniel continued.

"I think Frank found out about the provision and tried to use it. He wanted control of the money. Anthony and Richard helped move the funds, but I don't know who signed the final authorization."

The video ended with Daniel looking directly into the camera.

"Whatever happens, I want you to remember that you don't owe anyone your freedom. Not your brother. Not me. Not anyone."

He smiled sadly.

"I love you. I wish I could come home."

The screen went black.

Natalie could barely breathe.

For two years, she had wondered whether Daniel had died because of an ordinary accident. Now she was learning that he had been carrying a dangerous secret and trying to protect her from it.

Alessandro stood motionless.

"My father created that trust," he said.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't know your name was in it."

"How is that possible?"

"Frank handled the records after my father died. I trusted him."

Natalie looked at Dominic.

"Can someone access the trust without the beneficiary knowing?"

"Not lawfully," Dominic replied. "But the records suggest someone may have tried to alter the documents."

Detective Hayes requested the original agreement and ordered a formal examination.

The following day, the attorney who had prepared the trust confirmed that Natalie was a protected beneficiary. The document had not been changed legally, but a separate copy submitted to a financial institution contained altered pages.

The false copy listed Frank Vitale as the sole controlling representative.

That discovery established a direct reason for the financial scheme.

Frank had been trying to take control of assets that were never his to command.

But why had Daniel died?

The answer remained buried.

Then the forensic specialist found a hidden audio fragment inside the laptop's deleted files.

The recording was dated the night of Daniel's death.

A man's voice said:

"Richard, you were supposed to handle Parker."

Another voice answered:

"I did what I was told."

Then the first voice spoke again.

"Did you get the ledger?"

The second man replied:

"No. Olivia has it."

The first voice became angry.

"Then find her before she gives it to the wrong person."

Natalie stared at the screen.

The forensic specialist isolated the audio.

May you like

The first voice was unmistakable.

It belonged to Frank Vitale.
