Chapter 5 - Sophia's Truth

y the third day, the bruises on Sophia's face had begun to fade into a light yellow, and

she was able to walk with the help of a brace. The constant terror in her eyes, however, had

not faded. She spent her days sitting by the window of the living room, watching the long driveway,

flinching at every gust of wind that rustled the oak trees. I kept her close, feeding her warm meals,

and slowly, she began to share the depth of the corruption she had witnessed.

"Victor didn't just bribe people, Mom," she said, clutching a warm mug of tea. "He recorded them.

He has a private safe in his office at the Hale Group headquarters. It contains hard drives with video

footage of local politicians, police captains, and even several prominent judges receiving bribes,

engaging in illegal activities, and compromising themselves. He calls it his 'insurance policy.' He told

me that as long as he has those drives, he is completely untouchable."

"A classic blackmail ring," I murmured, taking notes on a yellow legal pad. "It explains how he

managed to avoid state-level investigations for so long. Every time a detective got too close, the file

would mysteriously disappear, or the detective would be reassigned."

"He’s planning a massive shipment this Friday night," Sophia continued, her voice trembling. "A

container ship called The Odyssey is arriving at Pier 14. He said it’s the shipment that will set him

up for life. He was celebrating with his associates when I confronted him about his lies. That’s when

he lost his temper and attacked me. He said if I ruined this deal for him, he would kill me and make it

look like a tragic accident."

I stood up and walked to my study, my mind racing. Pier 14 was outside the jurisdiction of the

local police; it was a federal customs zone. If we could intercept that shipment, we wouldn't just catch

Victor’s associates—we would catch Victor himself in the act of smuggling contraband. I immediately

called Agent Carter through our secure, encrypted line. "Carter, we have the location and the time of

the major shipment. Friday night, Pier 14, The Odyssey. He has a safe in his main office containing

blackmail material on local officials. We need a dual-raid warrant."

"We're on it, Judge Vance," Carter's voice crackled with excitement. "With the wiretap evidence

we've already gathered, we have more than enough probable cause to secure a search warrant for his

headquarters. We’ll coordinate with federal customs and the US Coast Guard for the pier. We're going

to shut him down."
