Chapter 2 - The Syndicate's Shadow

didn't reply to Victor's text. In the courtroom, I had learned that giving a predator any

indication of your next move was the quickest way to lose the upper hand. I returned to the

living room, where Sophia was shivering despite the warm wool blanket I had wrapped around her. I

sat beside her, gently wiping the blood from her lip with a warm, damp cloth. The swelling on her

ankle was severe, but she refused to go to a public hospital. "Victor has people at the local clinic, Mom.

He pays the security guards. He pays the shift supervisors. If I go there, he’ll know."

"You are safe here, Sophia," I said, my voice steady, carrying the absolute authority of a woman

who had ruled over the federal district court for three decades. "I am calling Dr. Sterling. He is an old

family friend, and his private practice is entirely off the grid. He will come here."

While we waited for the doctor, I listened to Sophia's shaking voice as she detailed the nightmare

her marriage had become. Victor’s charm had faded almost immediately after the wedding, replaced

by a suffocating, calculated control. He kept track of her odometer, monitored her bank accounts, and

isolated her from her friends. But the real horror began when she accidentally walked into his private

study and saw financial ledgers containing names of prominent city officials, local police captains,

and judges alongside multi-million-dollar transactions labeled as 'consulting fees.'

"He isn't just a businessman, Mom," Sophia whispered, looking at her swollen belly. "He’s running

a massive distribution network. Weapons, money laundering, human trafficking... he controls the

entire city's ports. When I told him I was leaving and taking the baby, he lost his mind. He hit me,

Mom. He said the law in this state is nothing more than a toy he bought and paid for."

I squeezed her hand, my heart breaking for the pain she had suffered, but my mind was already

calculating the legal parameters of Victor's destruction. I knew exactly who Victor was. For the past

six months, a joint task force of the FBI and the DEA had been quietly building a RICO case against his

empire, the Hale Group. They had been missing one final, crucial piece of authorization to pierce his

encrypted communications—a federal wiretap warrant. And as the chief federal judge of the district, I

was the only one with the authority and the clearance to sign it in complete secrecy. Victor thought he

had bought the local precinct. He had no idea he was playing in a sandbox, while the tide of federal

justice was about to wash him away.
