Chapter 3 - The Sirens at the Gate

Marcus froze with his phone halfway to his ear, his jaw dropping in sudden, panicked confusion. "Mom... what is she talking about?"
"She’s bluffing!" Vivian snapped, though a sudden bead of sweat trickled down the side of her neck, ruining her porcelain powder. "The conservatorship was approved by Judge Callahan! It’s sealed!"
"Judge Callahan was arrested at DFW International Airport ninety minutes ago while attempting to board a private flight to Belize, Vivian," I said calmly. "His offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands were seized under a federal grand jury warrant."
My phone vibrated with a sharp chime.
A text notification appeared on the screen, illuminating my face in the amber chandelier light.
I looked directly into Vivian’s widening eyes and read the alert aloud:
"Tactical Federal Law Enforcement units have breached the perimeter gate. ETA: Sixty seconds."
The color drained from Vivian’s face until she looked like a carved marble statue of terror.
Marcus lunged forward, grabbing his mother’s arm with trembling force. "Mom! You said we were safe! You said Callahan guaranteed the transfer!"
From the long winding driveway outside, the concussive, wailing roar of high-speed police sirens tore through the quiet evening air. Flashing red and blue strobe lights painted the arched leaded-glass windows of the estate in blinding crimson and cobalt.
The massive front doors burst inward with a deafening crash.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!"
Ten heavily armed tactical agents in FBI tactical vests swarmed into the grand foyer, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting bright red dots across Marcus’s chest and Vivian’s velvet dress.
Leading the strike team was Special Agent David Vance, flanked by four federal marshals and two emergency pediatric-trauma paramedics.
"Vivian Hale and Marcus Reed," Agent Vance announced with booming authority. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, attempted murder, corporate embezzlement, and aggravated felony elder abuse."
Vivian backed against the grand staircase, screaming in hysterical fury: "Get your hands off me! I am the CEO of Hale Construction! You can't arrest me in my own house!"
"You're not the CEO, Vivian," Agent Vance replied coldly, signaling his marshals. "And this is not your house."
Two federal marshals pinned Vivian against the marble banister, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists with brutal finality. Marcus fell to his knees beside the fireplace, sobbing pathetically as an agent twisted his arms behind his back, removing my mother’s gold watch and placing it into an evidence bag.
The paramedics rushed to my father, stabilizing his pulse with warm oxygen and IV fluids, lifting him gently onto a transport gurney.
As they wheeled my father toward the ambulance, he reached out, gripping my hand with trembling, restored strength.

"You came home, Isabella," my father wept softly.
"I came home, Dad," I replied, kissing his forehead. "And the house is ours again."
