Chapter 10 - The Safehouse|

By three in the morning, a black armored SUV pulled up outside my family's rundown apartment building in Queens.

My mother, Elena, met us at the door wearing her faded robe, her eyes wide with terror as two tall men in suits carried our luggage down the stairs.

"Sophia! What is happening?" my mother panicked, clutching Mateo against her side. Mateo was rubbing his sleepy eyes, his small hand holding his blue inhaler. "Who are these men? Did the landlord call the police?"

"No, Mama," I said gently, wrapping my arms around her shoulders. "This is Alexander Ashford. He... he knew Papa."

My mother froze, her eyes drifting toward Alexander, who stood quietly in the hallway, holding his coat over his arm.

"He knew Miguel?" she whispered.

"Miguel saved my life, Mrs. Reyes," Alexander said respectfully, bowing his head slightly. "And tonight, I am honoring a promise I made to him. You and your children are coming with me to a place where you will be safe."

Twenty minutes later, we were speeding away from Queens in the back of the sleek SUV. Mateo was mesmerized by the ambient lights inside the vehicle, while my mother held my hand tightly, her eyes filled with unspoken questions.

We arrived at the Ashford Estate just as the sun began to peek over the horizon. It was a massive stone mansion surrounded by acres of pine forest, high iron fences, and visible security patrols.

A team of doctors was already waiting at the front entrance to evaluate Mateo's condition.

As my mother and brother were led up the grand staircase to their luxury guest suites, Alexander walked me toward the back patio overlooking a tranquil, mist-covered lake.

"They will be safe here," Alexander said, turning to look at me. "No one enters these grounds without my personal permission."

I looked out over the quiet water, feeling a strange mix of relief and terror.

"Thank you, Alexander," I whispered.

"Don't thank me yet," he said softly, his eyes darkening as he looked toward the treeline. "The storm is just beginning."
