Chapter 6 - The Theft

|

The kitchen exploded into violent chaos. Brutus hit the first thug like a freight train, his massive jaws locking onto the man's forearm. The thug screamed in sheer agony as the dog's sheer weight drove him backward into the hallway wall, plaster cracking under the impact.

"Get the pole on him! Get the damn pole!" Silas shouted, backing away to avoid the snapping teeth.

The second thug lunged forward, swinging the heavy metal catch-pole. The wire loop caught Brutus around the thickest part of his neck. The man yanked backward with all his might, choking the massive dog and twisting the mechanism to lock it in place.

Brutus thrashed wildly, his claws tearing deep gouges into the cheap linoleum floor, but the restricted airflow began to slow him down.

"No! Let him go!" Brier screamed, lunging at Silas with the kitchen knife.

Silas sidestepped effortlessly, grabbing her wrist and twisting it brutally until the knife clattered to the floor. He backhanded her across the face with devastating force. Brier hit the kitchen counter and collapsed, her vision swimming in dark, starry bursts of pain.

"Mama!" Posie shrieked from the bedroom. The little girl had crawled out of bed, blindly feeling her way toward the door, tears streaming down her face. "Brutus! Where are you?"

Brutus heard the child's panicked cry. He found a final surge of terrifying strength, dragging the man holding the pole two feet across the room, desperately trying to get to the little girl.

Silas pulled a heavy stun baton from his jacket. It crackled with blue electricity.

"Good boy," Silas sneered, and thrust the baton directly into the dog's ribs.

The voltage was massive. Brutus convulsed violently, a pained yelp escaping his jaws before his eyes rolled back and his massive legs gave out. He collapsed heavily onto the floor, panting rapidly, completely paralyzed by the shock.

"Muzzle him and drag him to the van," Silas ordered, adjusting his jacket as if he had just finished a brisk walk.

"Please!" Brier sobbed from the floor, blood dripping from her split lip. "He's her guide! She needs him!"

"Buy her a cane," Silas laughed coldly, stepping over Brier's trembling body.

They dragged the unconscious dog out the door. Posie sat on the floor of her bedroom, her unseeing eyes wide with terror, screaming for a protector who could no longer answer.
