Chapter 20 - The Shadow Lingers

Inside the box, resting on a bed of dark velvet, was a heavy, custom-made leather collar. It was thick enough for a dog of Brutus's massive size, reinforced with steel rivets, but the leather was buttery soft and incredibly expensive.
Attached to the collar was a thick, silver tag.
Brier picked it up, running her thumb over the engraved letters.
It didn't just have Brutus's name. It had a phone number, and a single, chilling line of text etched deeply into the metal:
This animal belongs to Posie Holloway. Protected by the Rossi Syndicate.
It was the ultimate shield. A terrifying, undeniable warning to anyone in the city who might ever think about crossing them again. Gabriel hadn't just given them an apartment; he had wrapped them in his own terrifying reputation.
Brier smiled, a profound sense of peace washing over her. She called Brutus over and fastened the heavy collar around his thick neck. He sat proudly, his amber eyes shining as Posie reached out to feel the new, smooth leather.
"It's beautiful," Posie beamed, her fingers tracing the cold silver tag. "Did the nice man send it?"
"Yes, baby," Brier whispered, kissing her daughter's forehead. "The nice man sent it."
Later that evening, Brier sat by the living room window, watching the snow begin to fall over the quiet street.
Down the block, parked in the shadows of a broken streetlamp, a sleek, black Maybach idled silently, its headlights completely dark. The tinted windows made it impossible to see inside, but Brier knew exactly who was sitting in the back seat.
She didn't feel afraid. She felt an overwhelming, strange sense of comfort.
She raised her hand to the glass and offered a small, grateful wave into the darkness.

Across the street, the taillights of the Maybach flared briefly red in the falling snow—a silent, acknowledging response—before the massive vehicle pulled smoothly away from the curb, disappearing into the freezing Chicago night.
The debt was paid. The monster from her past was destroyed. But the shadow of the mafia boss lingered over their lives, a dark, protective guardian watching over the little blind girl and the massive dog who guided her through the dark.
