THE WEIGHT OF REVENGE / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Sister’s PleaThree weeks before our wedding, I sat in a private booth at an quiet tea room in Midtown Manhattan.

Sitting across from me was my sister, Chloe.

She looked entirely different from the arrogant bride who had dragged her lace train across the Napa Valley lawn. She wore simple clothes, no makeup, and her shoulders were slouched in defeat.

"Thank you for meeting me, Valerie," Chloe said quietly, staring down at her cup.

"What do you want, Chloe?" I asked, my tone polite but distant.

"I wanted to say... I'm sorry," Chloe whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Mom told me for years that I had to secure a rich husband to be happy. When Michael started flirting with me while he was engaged to you... I thought I was winning. I thought I was proving I was better."

She wiped a tear from her cheek. "I was an idiot. Michael was a fraud, and I ruined my relationship with my only sister for a man who didn't even care about me."

I listened quietly, feeling the last lingering threads of resentment in my heart finally loosen and drift away.

"I forgive you, Chloe," I said softly. "Not for Michael’s sake, but for mine. I won't carry anger into my new life."

Chloe looked up, her eyes bright with surprise. "Are... are you inviting me to the wedding?"

I looked at my sister, taking a long, thoughtful breath.

"No, Chloe," I answered gently but firmly. "Forgiveness doesn't mean resetting the boundaries. You and Mom need time to learn who you are without using people. I hope you find peace, but my wedding is for the people who truly support me."

May you like

Chloe nodded slowly, accepting my boundary with a quiet, respectful nod. "I understand. I really do. You look happy, Valerie. Gabriel loves you."

"He does," I smiled softly, standing up from the booth. "And for the first time in my life, I love myself too."
